Pico Rojo

Last minute hunt for lunch in the area brought me to Pico Rojo and I'm so glad it did. This Latin America restaurant is casual cool found in a strip mall off of McMullen booth and enterprise. I was a bit concerned when it was empty at 1pm but there were still plenty of take out orders coming and leaving.

This isn't a traditional restaurant with servers but rather order at the counter from the menu on the wall and either take it to go or they bring to your table. Similar to some fast food places.

The main fare is roasted chicken. I had the meal with white chicken and 2 sides. Sides were fried cheese and sweet plantains. Drinks you choose from the fridge. Latin America options, American options and imported beer.
The chicken came with two small sauces that were good.
$14 minus the drink

Chicken hot off the spit here is amazing. White meat is every bit as juicy as the dark meat, which in rotisserie chicken land is truly a sight to behold. Tender and well seasoned chicken, it goes great with either sauce. I really appreciated that one of them was super spicy, while the other was creamy to balance the two out.

Sides are also really good. Yucca fries are super crisp and not the least bit greasy, begging to be dunked in the aji sauce. Sweet plantains are super ripe and bursting with a nice sweet contrast. Rice and beans were also well seasoned and I enjoyed them, which really says something cause I normally hate beans. The fried cheese was also a pleasant surprise as it had a nice squeak and was different but probably the best of the sides in flavor.

Note that when they say the whole chicken will likely feed 2-3 people, it's probably true as the chickens are on the smaller size which helps them cook better and the sides are relatively small, but put all together it's a good amount of food.

One of my favorite restaurants in the area. The chicken is always cooked perfectly, the sauces are amazing and the sides incredible too! Consistently awesome food.

Love! This Safety Harbor hole in the wall is so authentic and appetizing. I've been here multiple times and every time it is exactly what I am craving. Service is quick and reliable. I always get the chicken meal with rice/beans and plantains. They serve it with two house made sauces: one spicy green sauce and then a white sauce for the chicken. Definitely worth the hype on this one.

The food was wonderful! They have tons of gluten free options! We would highly recommend Pico Rojo!

Food is good but the sizes are super small, they are single serving. Definitely not to share.

I'm back here again 6/11 and they arrest every customer like family and every meal is made with love. Worth the trip every time.

This place is amazing! Chicken is juicy and tender and the sides are so good. Must try the rice, yucca and plantains! Great service. Very clean. I will return!
