I shopped here a few years back, and the employees were very kind, supportive, and helpful.
I also took the time recently to contact the store owner, who assured me that Understuff is an inclusive, safe space that welcomes people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, colors, shapes, and ages. Has anyone else tried to find out what happened, or is it all hearsay?
She did assure me that transfolk are absolutely welcome there, and that she does her best to keep Understuff a safe space for all- both customers, and employees.
I was quick to have an angry knee-jerk reaction myself, but decided to step back and ask the store myself if transfolk were really not welcome. I'm glad I did!
I found, by the way, some really gorgeous sexy plus sized undergarments. They are SO hard to find, but my absolute favorite lingerie is from here. This is also where I got the best bra fitting I've ever had. The employee who helped me spent a LOT of time getting it right!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Annie R.Palo Alto, CA712Aug 24, 2017
Understuff is a lovely little shop for bras, panties, pajamas, swim suits and more! I have been coming here for several years and always encountered friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable staff. Specifically, I brought my mom in who lives in the Bay Area and is always weary about trying on bras - she survived breast cancer and a mastectomy and is very self conscious. For the first time in probably 10-15 years, she was fitted for a bra and selected several she loved. The saleswoman was helpful, sweet, and kind. She made my mom feel at ease and found quality bras that fit. It was heartwarming and I was happy to stay for the 45 minutes or so it took to get her fitted. Thank you for the patience of the saleswoman, too!!
As an aside, the reviews on here that say the owners refused to serve transgender people has got to be totally garbage. Over the years, I have gotten to know the owners a bit and they seem like the least likely people to cast judgement or refuse service for something like that -- spearheading anti-discrimination issues in town, for example. I wholeheartedly think that would not be the case as described and it's probably an angry or unhappy person who is looking to hurt someone else.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Melanie S.Sacramento, CA120Aug 15, 2016
I have shopped in Understuff three or four times in the past year, and, each time, Hillary, the owner, has been extra helpful, knowledgeable and fun! Her selection of robes, gowns, pj's and ladies intimate-wear is just gorgeous! Although a lot of her stock is a bit out of my price range, I have found several things each trip at her lovely store that were beautiful, high quality and fit my budget.

I am very disappointed with your decision to refuse service to a transgender woman. Yes you have the right to refuse service to anyone, but shame on you for your decision as well as the way it was handled. If she was not a not a nice person to your staff, or acted in an inappropriate manner that would be one thing, but really? Shame on you.

I don't know what Melissa C is talking about. This store is great. Hillary is very knowledgable about undergarment design, construction, materials, and industry practices. Also, the store is really REALLY well organized and plesant. I am used to department stores (or marshalls) where the racks are a total mess and all the sizes are jumbled together and impossible to sort out. Understuff has a really amazing range of sizes, styles, and materials which is great if you are looking for something that FITS PERFECTLY. Every body is slightly different and Hillary is an expert at helping people figure out their exact measurements and what bra design, construction and dimensions will get the job done. For example, did you know that there is a size 30? That is right, 32 is not the smallest ribcage measurement. The cups sit differently on a 30 vs a 32 vs a 34. Also b cups are slightly smaller and usually closer together on a 30 vs a 32 vs a 34. Knowledge = good. The bra I got there is so comfortable. Perfect fit. I would be bereft if this store ever left.
