I love it when they run about like that!. I am hot on the trail of a guernsey for my next milk cow. Fingers crossed.

Their first day out – they were tuckered out after a few sessions of playing and learning about the electric fence :p

Matron, I’m assuming that Lo Fat will eventually join the herd when he is weaned? Will Reese join the herd too?

Barb, hopefully next spring they can both go with the herd, but definitely not before then.

Great action shot of Lo Fat – bull calf as big cat! Such a difference in conformation between them – looks like Reese has his Mother’s ‘gangling’ genes.

Yes, right there is the stark difference between a beef breed and a dairy, one puts their all into meat and the other into milk production. It’s amazing how much stronger the beef calves are with the extra muscle.

Are these two the same type of cow? Reese looks well filled out and the other guy-well I can see his ribs! Is that normal for this stage of life?

    • August 14, 2014 5:00 am

No, one is full-blooded dairy, and the other full-blooded beef. Reese is the dairy calf, and yes seeing ribs is common on a dairy breed at all stages of their life.

Awe BFF’s! 🙂 Too bad most humans can’t get along that well with other “breeds” !!

When I see a calf running, I think…cute baby! When the hubby sees one running…he says,”Stop!, you’ll get tough”

I love having 2 claves on the cow – they do so much better imo with a buddy.

And the dairy baby is not skinny….those calves raised on a commercial diary are *skinny*. That’s a healthy, cow fed, dairy calf in the flesh
