It may be due to Ulcerative colitis or congenital megacolon (Hirschsprung's disease).In newborns there is absence of ganglionic cells in the wall of colon.So normal peristalsis fails to occur and ultimately leading to increase in diameter.In toxic megacolon seen in ulcerative colitis there is inflammation extending entire thickness of colon.
