Juniperus sabina Tamariscifolia Group 'Arcadia'
ht: 16-20 in. tall x 3-5 ft. wide
ha: as 'Tamariscifolia' but lower, branchlets angles at 15-30 degrees, tips hooked or abruptly decurving at times
lt: more adult foliage than intermediate 'Tamariscifolia'
lc: light green by some reports.  Dirr says it is darker than 'Skandia'
dr: it has good juniper blight resistance in most evaluations.
ch: USDA 3 - a bit more cold hardy
eval: it is a good low spreading but J. chinensis 'Parsonii' seems favored for similar height and color. CALGARY CARPET is lower and often preferred.
or: F.J. Grootendorst & Sons, Boskoop from seedlings of D. Hill Nursery IL USA grown from Russian seed obtained in 1933
in: F.J. Grootendorst 1949

Juniperus sabina Tamariscifolia Group 'Arcadia Compact'
ha: more compact than 'Arcadia' and overall lower
ht: 1 ft. tall x 5-8 ft. wide
lc: medium green, similar to 'Arcadia' but never bronzing in winter

Juniperus sabina 'Aureovariegata'
ha: compact, slower
lc: new growth all yellow by some reports, mottled yellow overall.. It is never cream mottled as with 'Variegata'.
lt: similar to 'Cupressifolia' but scale-like or adult foliage is more abundant
or: Abbeyleix House, Queens Co., Ireland as sport prior to 1923

Juniperus sabina 'Blue Danube' ('Russian Savin No. 4', 'Blaue Donau')
ht: 12-16 in. tall x 4-6 ft. wide
ha: arching-spreading to horizontal
lc: blue-green to greyish-green. It is one of the most glaucous members of this genus by reports.
lt: mix of adult and juvenile foliage
ch: more cold hardy in continential Europe

Juniperus sabina 'Blue Forest'
ha: multi-stems with main stems distinctly vertical. It appears to
ha: be a miniature forest of small dense conicaly blue trees. It
ha: is like a J. sabina version of the J. horizontalis 'Alpina' and 'Grey Pearl'
ha: and with age shows the same splitting effect.
ns: it has sometimes been listed under J. chinensis but we believe
ns: this species affinity to be correct. Vertical forms of J. sabina
ns: as well known and 'Erecta' is the best known one.
lc: bright blue but not silvery.
lt: mostly intermediate to highly juvenile.
in: Wayside Gardens to US? about 1986. Sometimes sold as J. horizontalis.

Juniperus sabina 'Blue Harbour'
ns: a listed name, probably error for J. horizontalis 'Bar Harbor' or as the RHS suggests J. scopulorum 'Blue Heaven'

'Blue Vase' - click image
Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, Charlotte, NC USA. Spring 2004. The cultivar is bluish-green and nicely feathered.

Juniperus sabina 'Blue Vase' (Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Vase', NOT J. chinensis 'Blue Vase')
ha: spreading with branchlets angled at about 30-40 degrees, often dense as mature plants, very feathery and vigorous when young
lc: slightly bluer green than most adult-leaved clones, it is very a bright or rich blue as J. horizontalis clones.
ns, id: this is not the larger, vase-shaped J. chinensis clone. It often circulates under J. horizontalis and
ns, id: I discovered it around US gardens in 1983 when doing by Master's thesis on over 60 J. horizontalis
ns, id: clones. It has a faint savin-like odor and very much the habit of J. sabina. The J. chinensis clone under this
ns, id: name is bright steel blue (never this green), not wider than tall, quite large and vertical (3-6 ft. pyramidal to ovoid), and a mix of adult and
ns, id: juvenile foliage (distinctly heterophyllous).

'Broadmoor' - click image
JC Raulston Arboretum. May 2004. A shaded example which in all junipers encourages more widely diverging needles.

Juniperus sabina 'Broadmoor'
ht: 2-3 ft. tall x 6-10 ft. wide
ha: compact when young, it is not dwarf are sometimes reported, never a good as J. x media Pfitzeriana clones with juvenile foliage

Juniperus sabina 'Buffalo'
ht: 12 in. tall x 8 ft. wide - lower
ha: like a lower Tamariscifolia Group plant
lc: bright green all year, not discoloring
ch: more cold hardy - USDA 2-3

CALGARY CARPET - click image
Gotelli Collection, US National Arboretum. April 2004.

Juniperus sabina  CALGARY CARPET 'Monna' ('Mini-Arcade', 'Sierra Spreader'?)
ht: 12-14 in. tall x 4-6 ft. wide - one of the best low clones
ha: low-spreading, branches at a 10-25% degree angle to the ground (smaller angle than 'Skandia', 'Blue Vase' and others), tips decurving and drooping
lc: medium olive-green, a pleasant shade all year
or: Monrovia Nurseries, CA USA, apparently dervied from 'Arcadia'

Juniperus sabina Cupressifolia Group (f. cupressifolia Aiton as cultivated , 'Cupressifolia', var. cupressina, var. horizontalis, var. nana Carr. in part)
ha: low, spreading, branchlets may be ascending or erect
lt: adult, scale-like, appressed
lc: bluish-green
sex: female
id, ns: some plants sold as J. sabina nana in Europe may be J. horizontalis 'Humilis'. This entity is unclear except in older collections or from vouchers.  We have
id, ns: never seen in a plant in the United States or Canada under this name. Very tall or erect plants under this name may be 'Erecta'. Bean considered
id, ns: Aiton's var. cupressifolia to part of the species but it has been reinterpreted to be a lower, smaller entity over the years. Good clones should be named
id, ns: and this name abandoned by the nursery trade.
or: Europe before 1789.

Juniperus sabina elegans = J. sabinoides

Juniperus sabina 'Erecta' (cupressifolia hort. not Ait.)
ht: 4-5 ft. tall
ha: very erect, branches angles at 45-80%, more erect than most Pfitzer type junipers, tips decurving
lc: intermediate to adult
lc: rich green

Juniperus sabina 'Fastigiata' (pyramidalis)
ht: 4-6 ft.
ha: erect, narrow, often having multiple heads or sections with age
ft: adult, scale-like
lc: dark green
or: Europe before 1891, it may be from Holland but this is unclear

Juniperus sabina 'Femina'
ha: low, spreading, mounded, branchlets more erect
sex: female
or, id: there are many female species variants in the wild quite similar. This clone is from
or, id: Hesse in Germany befroe 1958

Juniperus sabina 'Glauca' (var. cupressifolia glauca, var. humilis in part, var. humilis glauca)
lc richly glaucous-blue
or: Europe, probably Holland, before 1932
id, so: it is thought to be lost to gardens. There are more glaucous selections. In the US 'Blue Vase' covers this part of the market but it
id, so: never as blue most J. horizontalis clones.

Juniperus sabina 'Golden Tam' provisional name
lc: presumably golden
li: Iseli, J. 1983. Iseli plant list 12/18/83. personal communication.
ns: this is NOT 'Motherlode'. We have written to Iseli staff to determine
ns: if the plant still exists and will be marketed (2/92). No response to date.
or: Jean Iseli of Boring OR. He listed this in his collection since 1983.

Juniperus sabina f. gymnosperma
frt: female cones scales spreading (divergent), seed often visible. The name means "naked seed"
or: Schroeter found this in Switzerlan before 1903. It is an obnormally known in other species but not important for horticulture.

Juniperus sabina 'Heidi' (Juniperus horizontalis 'Heidi')
fc: very dark green
li: Vermeulen Nur.Cat. Spring 1975: 16
or: unknown but not at Vermeulen Nursery according to that firm
so: specimens exist at RBG Hamilton and NC State Arboretum for research

ns: originally sold as a J. horizontalis

Juniperus sabina 'Helcon'
ns: a listed name from Germany c. 1978.

Juniperus sabina 'Hennemann'
ns: a listed name from van de Larr c. 1986, known in Boskoop

Juniperus sabina 'Hetzii' = J. 'Hetzii'

Juniperus sabina 'Hicksii'
ha: upright in some plants, others have horizontal branching
lt: mostly intermediate to juvenile
lc: greyish-blue, tinged purple inw inter
or: Hicks Nursery, Long Island, NY USA before 1940.

Juniperus sabina 'Hoar Frost'
ha: compact, low spreading, foliage often tufted into clusters.
lc: yellow new foliage becoming green with maturity

Juniperus sabina 'Holmbury Hill'
ha: low, spreading, a vartiant on f. cupressifolia Aiton of finer texture
lc: said to have better (greener?) winter color than f. cupressifolia

Juniperus sabina 'Hornibrookii'
ha: lower, procumbent, branchlets may be erect, dense, and very short
lt: mostly adult, scale-type, sometimes intermediate or heath-like
lc: yellowish-green.

Juniperus sabina 'Jade'
lc: rich jade green
or: Fairview Nur. in ?

Juniperus sabina 'Knap Hill' = J. x media 'Pfitzeriana'

Juniperus sabina var. lusitanica (Mill.) A & G
ha: upright, more erect, branchlets more horizontal
st: often quadangular or nearly so
frt: female cones more narrow at the base
frc: female cones very glaucous at first, later dark browneed
ns: plants sold as J. lusitanica are sometimes J. virginiana 'Tripartita' which could
ns: easily be confused for the color, foliage type, and growth form.

Juniperus sabina 'Mas'
lt: mostly juvenile, awl-shaped foliage
lc: greysish-green
sex: male

Juniperus sabina 'Mini-Arcade' = CALGARY CARPET

Juniperus sabina MOOR-DENSE

ha: center does NOT mound up with age like some cultivars
lc: bright 'crisp' green
ht: 8-12 in.
wd: 5-6 feet
or: Monrovia Nursery as a sport of 'Broadmoor'
so: Monrovia Nursery and local garden centers carrying their line

Juniperus sabina 'Mountaineer' = J. scopulorum 'Mountaineer'

Juniperus sabina 'Musgrave'
ha: lower spreading, very procumbent
lt: heterophyllous, a mixture of juvenile foliage (especially on young plants) and scale-like, adult foliage
lc: more blue-green on account of the greater amount of divergent (band-showing) needles.

Juniperus sabina 'New Blue' = 'Tam No Blight'

Juniperus sabina 'Pepin'
ha: upright
lc: blue-green
dr: blight resistant

'Skandia'  - click image
Gotelli Collection, US National Arboretum. April 2004. Once a favorite cultivar. Today there are lower, better colored clones.

Juniperus sabina var. procumbens = J. horizontalis in some clone or even the spreading Chinese juniper clones

Juniperus sabina reflexa = J. communis 'Pendula' or 'Oblonga Pendula' (which had been called 'Reflexa')

Juniperus sabina 'Savin' = common name of the species

Juniperus sabina Tamariscifolia Group 'Rockery Gem'
ht: 10-12 in. x 2-4 ft. wide - smaller than some but not a tiony "gem" by dwarf conifer standards.
ha: vigorous yet dense, spreading, a smaller and lower Tamarisifolia Group plant
lt: juvenile, needles well-diverged and showing the stomatal bands well, foliage often pungently scented when crushed
lc: blue-green

Juniperus sabina 'Skandia' ('Scandia', 'Scandens')

ha: lower, spreading, branches angled about 35-45 degrees to the ground (wider angle than 'Calgary Carpet')
lt: more juvenile, awl-shaped foliage than 'Arcadia' but I would rate it intermediate (slightly divergent) overall.
lc: light grayish-green overall, not as olive or dark as more adult, scale-leaved clones.
ns, id: there may be more than one clone. The "Hillier clone" is a smaller plant at only 20cm tall in 10 years. We must admit
ns, id: the photo above from the USNA does not have the abundant juvenile, rich blue color reported for Dutch plants.
sex: female clone

Juniperus sabina 'Sierra Spreader'
ht: 10-12 in. tall x 5-7 ft. wide
ha: very low spreading
lc: green all year
id: some state this clone is identical to 'Mini-Arcade' and thus 'Calgary Carpet'
li: Dirr, M. 1998. Man. Woody Land. Plts. Stipes Publishing. P. 518.

Juniperus sabina Tamariscifolia Group 'Tam No Blight' ('New Blue', 'Tamarisifolia Nana'?, 'Tamariscifolia Compacta')
ha: as 'Tamariscifolia' but compact
lc: more blue green than grey green of typical clones
dr: said to be blight resistant
li: Gelderen, D.M. van. 1985. Juniperus breed en plat groeiende cultivars.
li: Dendroflora 21: 3-33

Tamariscifolia Group 'Tamariscifolia' - click image
Tidewater/Hampton Roads Arboretum, Norfolk VA USA. Summer 2003. This clone is typical of what is grown in
the eastern US states.

Juniperus sabina Tamariscifolia Group 'Tamariscifolia'

ht: 2-4 ft. tall x 8-12 ft. wide
ha: broadly mounded to decumbent with age, easily cascading if allowed. Well grown plants can be very beautiful for regularly
ha: plumose and angled sprays. It is wonderful trailing over rocks or walls. It is larger than virtually all J. horizontalis cultivars of the same age.
ha: A healthy, strong plant is apt to extent and droop by a series of erect shoots curving outward and up. Plants in poor health may have
ha: slower, more scaly-like, appressed needles and be less elegant. Bean  can hardly be surpassed once again: "a fine architectural
ha: plant with closely tiered branched. It is not a geographical variety, but is occasionally met with in the wild".
lt: variable from intermediate, slightly divergent to a mix of intermediate and highly divergent (juvenile, awl-shaped) foliage.
ns: we believe it's rank as a horticultural group rather than a botanical variety or forma is justified. It has more than
ns: one clone. Since it may be found in the wild (per Bean and others) it might be regarded as a simple mutation or botanical forma.
dr: common clones are very susceptible to juniper blight. Resistant clones are better in regions with this problem.

Juniperus sabina 'Tamariscifolia Compacta' = 'Tam No Blight'

Juniperus sabina var. taurica Pallas = J. excelsa var. excelsa

Juniperus sabina 'Thomsen'
ht: 10-20cm - shorter
ha: lower, much more compact, spreading, prostrate in some examples, vigorous young shoots may be subfiliform
lt: mostly adult, scale-type
lc: darker green, very showy

'Variegata' - click image
JC Raulston Arboretum. Summer 2003. This slower form is good for dwarf shrub gardens as if never gets big. It is vastly superior to J. horizontalis 'Variegata' for both color
and form.

Juniperus sabina 'Variegata' ('Albovariegata'?)
ha: 2-3 ft. tall x 2-4 ft. wide
ha: compact, usually arching-spreading to mounded, rarely if ever wide-spreading, some plants in collections slow and sparsely-leaved, tips usually decurve
lc: dark green mottled cream at about 25-40% of surface

Juniperus sabina 'Von Ehren' ('Von Ehron')
ht: 3-4 ft. tall x 3-5 ft. wide
ha: arching-spreading to vase-shaped, sprays often narrower
lt: leaves intermediate to awl-shaped (juvenile)
lc: lighter green than some clones
