Cops arrest man accused of killing his roommate inside halfway house

Cops have arrested the man accused of killing his roommate inside the apartment they previously shared at a Manhattan halfway house, police announced Monday.

Ashraf Ahmed, 40, was arrested Sunday afternoon at a homeless encampment along the FDR Drive near East 19th Street after police identified him as a suspect in the murder.

The suspect, clad in a white Tyvek suit, flashed a toothy, sneering grin at the press as he was led out of the 13th Precinct on Monday morning.

Ahmed had visited his former roommate, Ybarra Moses, 54, Saturday at the apartment they had shared at Friend’s House in Kips Bay when other residents and security heard loud noise coming from inside, police said.

The facility, located on East 25th Street near Lexington Avenue, is a halfway house for those with HIV and AIDS.

Security guards at the building discovered Moses’ lifeless body around 1:45 a.m. after rushing to the room to check on the commotion, police said.

When security barged in, they saw Moses unconscious and covered in blood — and Ahmed standing nearby. Shards of glass were also discovered at the scene, police said.

Ahmed then rushed out of the room and fled the building.

Moses suffered stab wounds to the face and blunt force trauma to the body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ahmed, who has no prior arrests, was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, for the knife used in the slaying. He is due in Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday.
