Coming off an 8-0 victory over Norway on Monday, England’s women’s soccer team came under fire from a BBC broadcaster for its lack of diversity.
England is currently competing in the group stage of the UEFA women’s championship tournament.
Speaking about the team earlier this week, the BBC’s Eilidh Barbour said, “All starting 11 players and five subsitutes who came onto the pitch were white, and that does point towards a lack of diversity in the women’s game in England.”
British TV host Julia Hartley-Brewer shared the video and her displeasure towards the comment.
“I’m sorry, what?” she asked on Twitter. “There’s a problem with the England women’s team in the #WEUROS2022 being too “white”? Which players should be dropped because they have the wrong skin colour? Just extraordinary that a BBC presenter can say this and still be in her job!”
The website Outkick pointed out that there are three minority players on England’s women’s soccer team – Jess Carter, Demi Stokes and Nikita Parris – though they did not see action in the game against Norway.
In response to the segment, British tabloid Daily Mail revealed that the top 11 earners at the BBC are all white.
“Where are the BBC reports about the lack of diversity amongst its own disgustingly big earners? Nowhere, of course,” Daily Mail wrote. “Because the Beeb is an organization that loves to sneer at others, while remaining about as white, liberal and middle class as you can possibly get.”
