Leading Professional Society for Latino Nurses Across the Country

Leading Professional Society for Latino Nurses Across the Country

National Association of Hispanic Nurses is being spotlighted on the Community Art Wall located in the lobby of First Bank Chicago. The new exhibit highlights their mission to advancing the health in Hispanic communities and to lead, promote and advocate the educational, professional, and leadership opportunities for Hispanic nurses.

The National Association of Hispanic Nurses™ (NAHN) was founded in 1975 by Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, PhD, RN, ND, FAAN. Since its inception, NAHN has been the nation’s leading professional society for Latino nurses. With a growing membership and more than 40 local chapters, NAHN represents the voices of Latino nurses across the country. NAHN is devoted to promoting safe, quality health care delivery to Latino communities and individuals, and they recognize excellence among Latino nurses, provide formal and informal mentoring opportunities, and generally serve as a center of excellence for our members.

“Through support of our partners and donors, NAHN Illinois will be the largest non-profit nursing organization serving the most rapidly rising population statewide. We will be a driving force addressing healthcare opportunity and equity in the Hispanic population in Illinois” Monica Najera, President of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses-Illinois Chapter.

The goal of NAHN is to create a cadre of highly-qualified Latino nurses by advancing educational, professional and leadership skills and opportunities for our membership. In addition, they work to recruit additional Latinos into the nursing profession because, while Latinos represent 18% of the US population, less than 7% of the nursing workforce is of Latino descent.

NAHN members advocate, educate, volunteer, seek partnerships, and conduct programming in the Latino community to improve outcomes, elevate literacy, heighten education, and influence policy. They also work collaboratively with others to improve health equity and to create a future in which everyone regardless of race or ethnicity has opportunities to be healthy.

The National Association of Hispanic Nurses exhibit is located in the bank lobby and will be open to the public during regular business hours throughout the month of November. For more information about National Association of Hispanic Nurses or to sign-up for their newsletter, visit https://www.nahnnet.org/ or on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
