Andover Garden Club Presents a Whirlwind Tour of Begonias

Speaker at November meeting, open to the public, will offer tips on growing begonias and using them in floral arrangements.

Begonias are a diverse genus, whose unrivaled foliar beauty adds drama to the garden and home. Avid gardener and flower designer Mary Beth Hayes will discuss how to grow and care for begonias and how to incorporate them into floral arrangements. She will offer propagation techniques and suggest the best local sources. Attendees will each make their own leaf, stem, or rhizome cutting, and thereby take a baby begonia home.

Hayes is a Chelmsford-based begonia specialist who serves as vice president of the Buxton Branch of the American Begonia Society (ABS), is a certified judge for ABS shows, and cochaired the recent Tower Hill Botanical Garden begonia show. She has studied floral arranging with such notable designers as Francoise Weeks, Hitomi Gilliam, and Holly Heider Chapple. Her floral arrangements reflect seasonal, nature-based themes.
