West Orange Principal Looks Back

Five questions with outgoing West Orange High School Principal Arthur Alloggiamento.

As he finishes his tenth year at West Orange High School, Patch asked Mr. Alloggiamento what it is like to be the Principal, and what he plans to do in the future. Here's what he said:

What is the best part of being the West Orange High School Principal?

Being the Principal of West Orange High School is absolutely the best. There is not one component that I can describe that stands out. There are so many rewarding and gratifying components of the job:

Seeing a teacher deliver a masterful lesson in his or her class and seeing the students absolutely enjoying the lesson, having fun and learning.

Seeing students engaged in various co-curricular activities- whether it be on a team, in a club or performing at one of our concerts or special evenings.

Shaking the hands of 500 students as they graduate from our school knowing that we have prepared them well for college and career.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about the high school?

How great it is. There are absolutely so many opportunities here for youngsters to do well. Our rich curricular program offers so many courses for students; our co-curricular program is extensive and offers opportunities for students to be involved in school life; our facilities are second to none with a beautiful new addition and athletic facilities that are outstanding.

What are the first three things you do when you get to work every day?

Generally, I will check staff attendance, to make certain that all of our classes are covered; then I check my calendar for the day, so that I can prioritize the work I need to accomplish; and thirdly walk around the school in the morning to check activities and greet students and staff.

I hear you're retiring. Do you have any set plans for your retirement?

There are a number of things that I plan on doing among which are becoming a Master Gardener through a program with Rutgers. This will give me an opportunity to learn more and to volunteer in gardening projects in my county. I also plan on traveling, doing some home projects, seeing my grandchildren and children on a more regular basis. I would also like to do some part time work in education, whether it be mentoring principals or teachers.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I really enjoy gardening and traveling. I hope to take more advantage of the beauty that life has to offer.
