Description
Zeller's bolete (Xerocomellus zelleri) has a very noticeable blackish cap that shimmers pearlescent in the proper light. This beautiful cap can reach up to 12 cm across and is slightly convex in shape. This mushroom's underside is a mass of tightly spaced pores of golden yellow that fade to putrid green with age.

The zeller's bolete can be found in coniferous forests, and sometimes with hardwoods. It forms symbiotic relationships with tree roots, exchanging vital nutrients with hosts such as the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Fruitbodies will be found popping up from the soil beneath a host tree. Interestingly, this mushroom is also found beneath redwoods, which are not known to accept these symbiotic relationships.
