General Description

Flattened, cartilaginous and branched on one plane (complanate). Multiple secondary branches (laterals) arranged in alternate pattern, often overlapping, with squared (truncate) tips. Disc shaped to root-like holdfast. Medium to dark red. Up to 40 cm long (thallus).

Biology

This red seaweed can appear almost green in intertidal areas due to increased exposure to light that bleaches its colour.

Habitat

Intertidal and subtidal reefs, to depth of 25 m.
