Joe Hutton's father, Joe Sr., once turned down an offer to coach the Lakers in favor of coaching his son at Hamline College. The decision paid off for both of them as the Pipers won the NAIA national championship in 1949.

While his father ended up coaching at Hamline until 1965, Hutton went on to win an NBA championship with the Lakers in 1952. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 2.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and one assist in his two seasons with the team. He later became a high school basketball coach.
