February 16th: Spotted bat (Euderma maculatum)

Diet: Insects
Range: The Western Half of North America
Conservation Status: Least Concern

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! BEHOLD! THE LARGEST BAT EARS OF ANY BAT SPECIES IN NORTH AMERICA!

Hush, with the caps I can hear you just fine…

Sorry, but this bat gives the Honduran White a run for its fur in the cuteness race with its large ears and white spots. The large ears actually have use beyond hearing. It is thought they help the bat dissipate body heat it has generates flying around the desert climate. This bat is pretty rare to spot. They live mostly solitary lives and hunt throughout large deserts making it difficult to track down and even more difficult to catch.

Speaking of catching, Its’ another Pokemon inspiration today. This bat inspired the equally rare and beautiful modern Noivern.

This is the closest bat I have found to Noivern’s design with the large ears, white collar, rarity, and even the ability to walk on all fours as spotted bats do while eating grasshoppers!
