I was very curious how the whole plotline with "Who will be the Emperor's bestie?" would end. And, well... Poor skekVar
I almost started shipping him with skekSo /and now I'm shipping them thanks to amazing fanarts that I found here. But I also ship the Emperor with Seladon, and it's hard to choose which pairing I like the most/
Anyway I hope that if there is ever a season 2, we will see how skekSo will reflect on skekVar's death. Also how skekSil will suddenly come to the conclusion that it's not enough to sit on a chair to the right of the Emperor. To sit on the Emperor's chair, on the other side...

I have seen your drawing on Twitter (couldn't comment since I'm a locked account and now I'm glad I can do it on here) and I wanted to say that your drawing made me realize how much they respectively look like a Spinosaurus (So), Tyrannosaurus Rex (Var), and Utahraptor (Sil), and now I can't unsee it. XD
Their weird little power/rivalry triangle was definitely one of the highlights of the show for me, and made SkekVar's death feel really unfair. Deserved, but not THAT way.
SoVar is my favorite pairing of the show, and I'm also really curious to see how he took his death. Even if they weren't mates, he was SkekSo's only true supporter and So knew it. I'm sure it affected him mentally pretty badly, you can tell he was upset when Sil told him. These puppets have more emotions than a lot of actors...

Actually the dinosaurs were my first association when I started studying Skeksis anatomy, so yeah XD
SkekVar didn't even get into the carriage and ride to the castle, he just sat behind a nearby bush and sat there badly wounded but also extremely sad. I'm assuming he was counting on returning to the battle in case he suddenly felt better? Anyway, his Emperor's disappointment must have hurt him more than Rian's blade
It definitely affected him, although he was silent, but this small gesture when he shook his head in disbelief during the skekSil's story of the death of his General... I wonder, what funeral rituals will skekZok come up with /since there are no actual corpses/, the Skeksis lost three of them in one day, it can’t be just left that way
I also share your opinion on SoVar relationship as a pairing. I mean, their relationship might be... not that abusive as a lot of people think. Var did many things for which So could punish him somehow. The General almost killed a valuable prisoner, failed to deliver those volunteers, then killed All-Maudra without the direct order, after that he had a chance to kill Rian /there was a looong moment before Lore arrived and started to break up their carriage/. Oh and also he failed to kill the prisoners which were "released". Punishment? No punishment. So only told Var that he failed him after that duel with Rian. But he told it without mocking him /like the others/, he only stated the fact. I also noticed that when the General said some not-so-clever phrase /"It's... purple"/, the Emperor didn’t go like "Omg skekVar you're so stupid lmao". And it is the Emperor we're talking about, the Emperor, who can easily mock and humiliate anyone around him just because, well, he can. Just for fun. But not Var
To add, I loved your artworks with them, especially, the last one, because I too wondered what they might look like in their youth /also, skekSo with white hair oh my... I mean, usually he is portrayed with dark hair, but these gorgeous white eyelashes... He must have had white hair back then. At least that's my headcanon :D/

I did think of dinos too, mostly raptors, but I never really associated the characters to specific dinos. XD
That's an interesting observation! Maybe he thought the carriage would be surrounded with enemy soldiers, or perhaps it was too cramped and he needed room to lay down? Or he was heading to the carriage and took another safer (but longer) road and collapsed on his way. Tho I really like your idea! Maybe he anticipated SkekSil would find him and provide him with essence, so he could join the battle as a shining star and impress the Emperor!
It was obvious the disappointment was what crushed him. First and last time we see the Emperor treat him like the other Skeksis.
I'm glad someone agrees! People seem to think he didn't give a shit but you can clearly see him swallowing a scream/sob. He's kind of wheezing in the BG for a bit after that scene too. Also I find it interesting how Skeksis felt the need to tell him he was "glad he could be with him during his last moments". I have the feeling that Chamberlain knew of their bond and was planning on killing the General for a while.
There's a canon source, a comic that was made in 2011 (I think) where you see the Skeksis in their youth. Even tho I disagree with their design (they're naked and skinny while SkekUng, SkekSa, and all the Skeksis who have a least a bit of hair disprove this), we see very interesting stuff... Namely, hoglet SkekVar! Back when we was ambassador! And we see that his bond with SkekSo is age old, with SkekSo feeling nervous when he's away for too long and SkekZok trying to warn the newly crowned emperor that his ambassador might be scheming against him. Yeaaaaah.... XD
About the possible rituals for the lost Skeksis, it's possible they might ask the others who's going to later join them in the castle, to pick up their clothes/ashes on their way. If they can't, they might use some of their belonging sitting in the castle/woods to honor their spirit. SkekSo might order his servants to make statues as a way to immortalize them (we all know So is all about copium).
I don't believe they had a Burns/Smithers relationship either. SkekVar REALLY was his favorite, and he had GOOD reasons to treat him better than the others. He was his only true follower (who was also the second strongest after SkekMal), and he had to keep it that way. He was his guard dog and his way to get his ego validated, and Var was happy to oblige. If you watch closely, you can notice So is often having unique interactions with him during group bonding, turning specifically to him when he laughs or taking him on 1v1 when they're all laughing/talking. Also, don't you think it's strange how So didn't get angry at Var for throwing a bottle of "essence" on the ground? He also took him on a 1v1 talk after that, perhaps he felt a bit concerned? As I've said before, they had a 900+ years bond, which makes me think the Skeksis can have special monogamous "alliances", like irl birds.
It's interesting too, your talk about Var's intelligence! So enjoys mocking everyone for any reason, do you think he ENABLED Var to be stupid so he could feel smarter? Or he was just strangely patient around him? I noticed Var tends to lower his voice around his Emperor, who suffers from hyperacusis, and So also talks to him very softly (especially when they're alone). Another interesting thing I noticed is how they look at each other. The Skeksis have some cat-like body language, for instance their eyes. When they're angry or afraid they open wide eyes, and they kinda squint when they're pleased/relaxed. They're both often squinting hard and even SLOW BLINKING at each other, which in cat language means trust and affection.
Thank you so much for the compliments on my art! Kinda having a artblock right now but I'll try to draw more, I want to draw all of the Skeksis! And I'm so glad you liked the youth one, I'm happy with it too. I like SkekSo with black hair, but white hair looks AMAZING on him. I think it pops way better on his black fur/feathers. And c'mon, he's voiced by Lucius Malfoy!

I also have a strong feeling that these two were in the same carriage while riding to the final battle. Probably, have been talking/joking all the way.
- General, do you think that the Dual Glaive would make a good toothpick?
/skekVar’ hard thinking noises/
- It is the Dual Glaive, so two good toothpicks.
/skekSo’ laughing noises/
/skekVar’ proud snorting noises ‘cause he was able to say smth funny and make his Emperor laugh, now it’s one of his greatest recent life achievements/
And that is why the Emperor was in such a good mood when they arrived at the battlefield.
Yes, I saw some of the frames from that comic, but yes, I agree that the design of the Skeksis is… Meh. Especially considering that according to the canon, Skeksis were beautiful in their youth. But in that comic they are all so thin and fragile, even skekVar. While in the series he is quite bulky, he should have had at least a wider bone structure from the very start.
I knew that Var was on So's side from the very beginning, but I didn't know that their bond was shown there. It seems now I have a good reason to read it XD
The statues sounds like a good idea… and very logical
Wow I hadn’t noticed all these things like squinting, slow blinking and voice lowering, now I want to rewatch these scenes /I watched the series twice, because, well, I discovered tdcaor only about a month ago/. However, I noticed that So does turn to Var during group bonding like that time when Seladon was like “Please, my Lords! Mercy!” and So, laughing, mimicked her phrase while looking at Var… But I didn’t notice that this was a pattern.
And about throwing a bottle of “essence”… Your assumption makes a lot of sense, because after that Var told Tek “You can swindle the Emperor and the others, but not me!”. Sooo, he was sure that the Emperor was being swindled and maybe that is also because of what he told Var after throwing that bottle? But, again, there was nothing strict or harsh said, because we saw the Emperor genuinely laughing just before skekZok told him about All-Maudra
My guess is that skekSo might have been irritated at first with his general's intelligence level, perhaps he was trying to do something about it, but skekVar... just have a limited thinking ability. And nothing can be done about that, it is just how his brain works. On the other hand, it's profitable. If the General was smarter, he would start to think a lot, ask questions that should not be asked, and might come to undesirable /for his Emperor/ conclusions. SkekSil for example is smart and he’s a threat because of that. SkekVar is not a threat, in his picture of the world everything is simple: there is his Emperor and he must be unquestionably loyal to him.
However, someone on tumblr had an interesting headcanon that Var had some kind of blunt force trauma /that was based on the fact that sometimes he couldn’t hit his enemy with a sword successfully, which probably meant that his depth perception was off/. If that was the case, then suing him for it simply would make no sense, so... patience here would be the only option
Btw, do you have any ideas on why Var didn't get out of the carriage in ep6? The first time I was watching that scene, I honestly thought he was going to come out and try to punch Rian in the face, because that is what he likes to do. But even after he said that he knew that the carriage wasn’t moving, he didn’t do anything, despite the fact that he had enough time /before Lore arrived/
Oh, an artblock… I wish you a lot of inspiration to overcome it! I’m looking forward to see your future artworks /especially with SoVar :D/, so good luck with it!

That's such a cute, and tragic idea! I could imagine them talking about using it as a fork to eat fondue or something! I'll miss his happy little snorts too... At least they DID get a last sweet little moment before the duel.
I think they look pretty good, but it'd be a more fitting design for them being in their 70s (in human years). Also, I have no idea what happened to SkekNa, they made him look like a short snouted turtle while he looks like an even more deranged Chamberlain in canon. At least we see a lot of interesting stuff (like the SkekShod vibecheck).
I do have the link to the whole comic (but I'm not sure how safe the website is), and screenshots I saved. I could share them with you on Discord, as long as you're over 18 of course. They have a few very interesting interaction, and it seems like SkekZok has been trying to turn them against each other since the very beginning, while getting closer of both at the same time. You can kinda see it in the carriage scene, where Zok tries to tell Var he's gonna get decked by the Emperor for what he did.
I also first noticed that during the Seladon scene! He's very often turning to him, you should def rewatch it and pay more attention to them, I swear it's insane how much it happens!
I agree! I tried to listen to what I was saying, but I couldn't make out anything but the General saying "Yes... Yes, yes... Yes." like agreeing with whatever the Emperor was telling him. Curse the Skeksis for all screeching like that. XD The Emperor had a calm/playful tone tho.
From my side, I actually don't believe SkekVar is stupid. I think he's one of the smartest of the bunch. When SkekSo asks him if he remembers his life as a UrSkek, SkekVar responds "I don't think of such things." and continues the deep conversation too. I believe he realized that being smart and thinking only gives people anxiety and decided to dissociate and avoid thinking as much as possible. You know what they say, the stupider you are, the happier you get. He was also described as a master tactician in a lot of official AoR sources.
I also like the brain trauma theory! I've even seen people mentionning strokes because he has a slighty lazy eye. But if he got blunt force trauma, do you believe it might have had something to do with his old helmet? The one with the horns?
Sooo, from my understanding... I think they were implying he was a coward, which doesn't fit with the rest of the show... Kind of a plot hole to not have him attack a defenseless Rian but have him happily charge at him when he holds the dual glaive. So, my guess is that he was very bloated from all the chrysalis he ate earlier. XD
Haha, been YEARS for me sadly. I hope I can provide more soon, and thank you so much! Can't wait to see what you'll come up with next too!

The whole plotline with their relationship is tragic not only because of Var's death but also because we know that So will die exactly as he feared to die the most. And, keeping that in mind while watching... Well... /"Sad, so sad"/
Talking about age, how old do you think they are in the canon (but like in human years)?
Yeah yeah, skekShod... hit by the Emperor and 1000 trine later by the podling...
Oh, it would be great! I'm 21, so no worries on that
I don't think Var is stupid-stupid, he could be clever like in certain sphere /war strategy/. However, your theory with him avoiding thinking makes sense
Hmmm... The old helmet with these horns/metal wings/whatever could be the reason, since theorethically it is easier for an enemy to hit it with a sword. Or the General could have just fallen or smth during a fight while wearing the helmet and get an injury because of these protruding metal parts... That could explain why in the future he chose to wear the helmet we see in the series
Btw, I noticed that before the final battle, skekVar put his armor on his casual armor. Obviously, they just decided not to change puppets' clothes, but... idk it's kinda funny. Also, Tavra impaled his armor with a sword too easily, which makes me wonder if his casual armor was... decorative?
Yes, he’s certainly not a coward, it would go against his character. So, yeah, a plot hole definitely... Nice guess with the chrysalis XD I was thinking maybe he put his sword in the wrong place and looked for it. Probably under the seat of the carriage, who knows...
Thanks!^^

Completely deserved from both sides, but still hard to watch. I know he's horrible, but it's so painful seeing his panic attacks... Tho, I'm glad he died rather than be reunited with his urRu. SoSu seems like to me he was an extremely mentally ill individual, and being merged again would have been torture for him.
Another super interesting thing about their relationship, is that urMa (Var's mystic) actually 100% goes against urSu's orders! I will show you on Discord, I'll send you a note after I'm done writting this.
SkekShod is such an underused character, and I have the feeling a LOT of neurodivergent people would really love him, just like a lot of LGBT/GNC people in the fandom relate to SkekEkt!
From what they portrayed in AoR, he barely takes any military initiative... It's all orchestrated by SkekSo. And when he does, it's always very dumb moves. Perhaps SkekSo WAS the millitary leader using Var to go on the battleground... Then it's next level favoritism, to come up with something by yourself and let someone else get credit for your ideas.
I have a feeling that badass helmet could be VERY dangerous. There's a good reasons bikers aren't allowed to put horns on their protective helmets... Especially not on the sides! Could easily be grabbed and pulled off, or cause bad injuries like you mentionned. However, this could have been a decorative helmet for his ambassador years!
I think the armor he wears in the show is decorative, it's a bit like a irl General walking around with his uniform and medals. He's always wants to remind others of his status, plus the helmet looks badass and... Hide things. XD
All of the Skeksis are more or less cowards in their own way, but him not attacking Rian was dumb... Especially since Lore was on his way to the rescue. I like to think the Skeksis are VERY lazy, since they basically domesticated themselves and are now as graceful as those chonky caracals you see all over YouTube.
No prob!

No prob!
Yes yes, especially that one moment after skekMal's death. It was unexpected for me, because it's not often you see an antagonist having a panic attack on screen /it felt even too realistic with all the wheezing and the falling voice, so, it was hard not to empathize, at least for me, despite the fact that So is not a very good person and deserved this/
Do you refer to that one UrSkek, which was bullied by Raunip and was the reason the Crystal split them apart? Do you think it could be SoSu?
I agree, Skeksis are very relatable. Well, maybe the scriptwriters were going to give him some interesting plotlines in season 2 as well as the other Skeksis which were absent in season 1? Also, I was thinking since they didn’t release a sequel as a comic or smth, although they could, maybe we’ll see season 2 someday.
Btw, another thing that excites me about the Skeksis is that they're kinda canonically hermaphrodites /"an uncomfortable mix between male and female"/ and chose their genders /or maybe the Gelfling decided to identify them as males from the start and their assumption was based on the fact that in Gelfling society females have wings and males don't. And most Skeksis were okay with it (?)/
The whole new level of favoritism sounds epic XD Seems like So is playing 5D chess
Yeeeah, hiding things... like his baldness
It would be understandable if Var was kinda afraid because of stone golem of unknown origin, but he just likes to punch anyone in the face and logically wouldn’t miss out on that chance /like it was with the Chamberlain/
Lazy plus old. Back to skekShod, I read in Wiki that he once said he would convert Gelfling from their barter system to a money system. And he didn’t /in a 1000 trine/ because he was too lazy for that. The level of procrastination is on top :D
I also noticed, that So was less active at the beginning of the series. Seems like that was because of the Darkening effects... and the essence temporarily fixed it. Or maybe he just got more screentime XD

Exactly the moment I was refering to! It REALLY hurts to watch. He also cried at SkekLach's death, like legit sobbed and stuff. Super unexpected!
Nope, that urSkek (Dark Heart) is actually believed to be SilSol by a lot of the fandom!
I'm sure they would have, I was especially interested in what they'd do with SkekSa! She's the fan favorite and people have very high expectations for her.
Yes, they were more or less confirmed to be intersex by Jim Henson himself! I have the feeling they all secretly really admired the female Gelfling when they were young, ence the reason they would wear makeshift wings and had those banners on their back during the Stone-in-the-Wood battle. I noticed they were all very feminine in different ways, and that would explain it. They probably picked whichever pronouns, since their language don't have them for obvious reasons.
Another fun thing, you could switch the voice and the pronouns for most of them and the public wouldn't see a difference, since they lack gender dymorphism. If SkekSo was an empress with the same design, people wouldn't think she'd look super masculine, since SkekSo is so androgynous.
SkekSo was 100% playing chess against himself the whole time... Then pulled a surprised Pikachu face when he lost. XD
Yep, bald eagle moment! I also noticed it hid a few of his wrinkles! He doesn't have a lot, but he looks a LOT older when he doesn't wear his helmet.
Lore was SCARY and it had a big pointy hand, and I'm pretty sure you can't stab a pure rock. And... You don't have to be SkekVar to enjoy kicking Chamberlain's crusty butt. XD
Interesting! I had no idea! In a way, it'd make sense for them to be lazy. They think they're immortal, what will they do during the eternity if they rush all of their projects?
I think you're right, he was really crusty from the Darkening, but still strong enough to retain charisma.

I will forever wonder what could have been with Skekvar. So many places to explore with his development but we got a lot out of him in that season.
