Discover the delightful charm of the Willow-leaved Magnolia, also known as Magnolia salicifolia or Anise Magnolia. Originally native to Japan, this small deciduous tree or shrub thrives in rocky, granite soil along streams. Reaching heights of 25 ft, the tree exhibits an architectural form ranging from a narrow to broad pyramid. One of its most striking features is its narrow lanceolate leaves with whitened undersides, emanating an enticing anise or lemon-verbena aroma when crushed. In spring, before the leaves emerge, fragrant white flowers bloom. These captivating 10 cm-wide blossoms consist of six petals. The tree also produces 5-7.5 cm long fruit, which initially appears rose-pink and fades to dull brown, containing striking scarlet seeds. Thriving in sunshine or part shade, the Anise Magnolia prefers moist, acidic soils. This hardy tree or shrub is adaptable to USDA Zone 4. Anise Magnolia is native to the islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan, and are available to add a touch of exotic elegance to your garden.
