Look At The Book! Esther Standing For What Is Right

2 Background For Esther A stand alone book Timeframe of 480s B.C.
Same time as Ezra and Nehemiah God never mentioned in the book Yet presence of God is implied in the transpiration of the events noted For our purposes today, let’s examine the behavior of two excellent women in the book.

3 The Moral Decision Of Queen Vashti
King Ahaseurus (Xerxes) throws a six month party Esther 1:1-5 – “…in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his princes and attendants, the army officers of Persia and Media, the nobles and the princes of his provinces….And he displayed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor of his great majesty for many days, 180 days.”

4 A Banquet For The Men Esther 1:7-8 – “Drinks were served in golden vessels of various kinds, and the royal wine was plentiful according to the law, there was no compulsion, for so the king had given orders to each official of his household that he should do according to the desires of each person.”

5 A Banquet For The Women Esther 1:9 – “Queen Vashti also gave a banquet for the women in the palace which belonged to King Ahasuerus.” Men and women were separated during the feasting. Vashti was entertaining the women as was proper in that culture.

6 A Drunken Command Esther 1:10-11 – “On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, to bring Queen Vashti before the king with her royal crown in order to display her beauty to the people and the princes, for she was beautiful.” Ahaseurus wants to show off his beautiful wife and have her ogled by his drunken crowd.

7 Vashti’s Refusal Esther 1:12 -- But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command delivered by the eunuchs. Then the king became very angry and his wrath burned within him. She was placing herself in extreme jeopardy. The queen served for the pleasure of the king – period!

8 The Extent Of The Law Initial result of her refusal 1:16-18 – “In the presence of the king and the princes, Memucan said, “Queen Vashti has wronged not only the king but also all the princes and all the peoples who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. For the queen’s conduct will become known to all the women causing them to look with contempt on their husbands by saying, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in to his presence, but she did not come.’ This day the ladies of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s conduct will speak in the same way to all the king’s princes, and there will be plenty of contempt and anger.”

9 The Dismissal Of Vashti
1:19-20 – “If it pleases the king, let a royal edict be issued by him and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be repealed, that Vashti may no longer come into the presence of King Ahasuerus, and let the king give her royal position to another who is more worthy than she. When the king’s edict which he will make is heard throughout all his kingdom, great as it is, then all women will give honor to their husbands, great and small.”

10 Keeping Man On His Pedestal
1:21-22 – “This word pleased the king and the princes, and the king did as Memucan proposed. So he sent letters to all the king’s provinces, to each province according to its script and to every people according to their language, that every man should be the master in his own house and the one who speaks in the language of his own people.” Who won?

11 The Wicked Plotting Of Haman
Introduction Esther 3:1 -- After these events King Ahasuerus promoted Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him and established his authority over all the princes who were with him.”

12 A Conflict Arises 3:2-4 – “All the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman; for so the king had commanded concerning him. But Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid homage. Then the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate said to Mordecai, “Why are you transgressing the king’s command?”

13 Rage And Plans For Annihilation
Haman becomes enraged 3: When Haman saw that Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid homage to him, Haman was filled with rage. But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone, for they had told him who the people of Mordecai were; therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus. Who do you suppose was behind those events?

14 Ahaseurus The Arrogant Fool
3:8-11 Haman determines his plan and decides on a day for a year later (by casting lots). Appeals to the kings arrogance by suggesting some of his subjects were not keeping his laws. Offered 10,000 talents of silver into the treasury if Ahaseurus would allow him to destroy the Jews.

15 Seque: Ahaseurus Doesn’t Know…
The king didn’t know that his queen, Esther, was a Jew. He’s just signed her death warrant as well as that for Mordecai her uncle, and all the other Jews. Haman was jubilant. He could finally be rid of the pesky Mordecai who refused to bow before him.

16 Esther: For Such A Time As This
Esther was the kings’ favorite 2:17 – “The king loved Esther more than all the women, and she found favor and kindness with him more than all the virgins, so that he set the royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.”

17 Mordecai Saves The King’s Life
2:21-23 Mordecai learns of a plot to kill the king Informs the king who promises to reward him. Never does reward him

18 Esther Must Approach The King
4:11, “All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that for any man or woman who comes to the king to the inner court who is not summoned, he has but one law, that he be put to death, unless the king holds out to him the golden scepter so that he may live. And I have not been summoned to come to the king for these thirty days….”

19 She Must Overcome Fear 4: Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, “Do not imagine that you in the king’s palace can escape any more than all the Jews. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?” Her choice: Be safe and lose her people, or be bold and possibly lose her life.

20 Reversal Of Fortunes And Irony
How did God’s people face adversity? Esther 4:16 -- “Go, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maidens also will fast in the same way. And thus I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.” Fasting and faithful resolve

21 Esther Honored 5:2 -- When the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, she obtained favor in his sight; and the king extended to Esther the golden scepter which was in his hand. So Esther came near and touched the top of the scepter. Is this all just happenstance?

22 The King’s Late Night Discovery
6: During that night the king could not sleep so he gave an order to bring the book of records, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. It was found written what Mordecai had reported concerning Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs who were doorkeepers, that they had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. Do you suppose this was happenstance? The king now wants to honor Mordecai since he never had before.

23 Haman’s Plot Backfires
6:6-10 – Haman enters the court to ask permission to hang Mordecai. King asks what should be done for a man who had served the King. Haman assumes he himself is to be honored. So, he suggests a prince-led horse ride with royal colors for the man. Only then does the king reveal that it is Mordecai, the man Haman hates most that is to be honored – and Haman is to do the honors!

24 Haman Hanged Later that same day Haman was brought to a banquet planned by Esther and attended by the king. There, Esther reveals to the king the truth behind Haman’s plot – and her own ancestry from the Jews. Haman had build a 50-cubit high gallows at his own house to hang Mordecai. 7:10 – “So they hanged Haman on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, and the king’s anger subsided.”

25 God Is Always In Control
Psalm 121:1-4 – “I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
