A comparison of the roles of the mating-type genes among the three hemiascomycetes Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans and Candida lusitaniae reveals plasticity. In S. cerevisiae (A) and C. albicans (B), the a1–α2 repressor complex in the a/α diploid represses mating. In C. lusitaniae (C), although a1 is involved in the repression of mating, α2 is absent, suggesting that a1 may interact with another protein, possibly α1, to form a repressor complex as suggested by Reedy et al. [4]. In mating-competent a/a cells of C. albicans and a cells of C. lusitaniae, a genes and mating is activated by a2, but in S. cerevisiae a cells, which lack a2, a genes, and thus mating, are expressed by default. The evolution of the mating process within the hemiascomycetes reveals a number of changes in MAT genes and meiotic genes. Landmark changes are incorporated into a phylogenetic tree, based on sequence data of six genes [6]. It is assumed that the genotype of the common ancestor was a1, a2, α1, α2 and, hence, the absence of one of these genes is considered a ‘loss’. On the other hand, meiotic genes were assessed by comparison with S. cerevisiae. ‘Absence’ rather than ‘loss’ was noted since many of the meiotic genes of S. cerevisiae are not present in Yarrowia lipolytica, which diverged from the common ancestor earlier than S. cerevisiae.
