Double Datives 1. Dative of purpose 2. Dative of reference (usually people, but not always) 3. Verb of being (esse), coming, going, sending, leaving. How to translate? The dative of purpose can be translated as a predicate appositive, using “as a” or “for a” or often as a verb or as a purpose clause. nobis praesidio erit = he will be as a protection for us = he will protect us Statua erit femineae virtuti monumento erit = the statue will serve as a monument to female courage = the statue will memorialize female courage Masinissa subsidio Carthaginiensibus venit = Masinissa came as a help to the Carthaginians = to help the Carthaginians Gracchi erant matri ornamentis = The Gracchi were as jewelry to their mom = their mother’s jewelry Caesar erit aliquando exitio nobilium partibus = Caesar will one day be for the destruction to the party of the nobles = Caesar will one day be the destruction of, etc. = Caesar will one day destroy the nobles’ party.
