San Antonio mayor declares Aug. 30 'Manu Ginobili Day'

In the wake of Spurs star Manu Ginobili’s retirement announcement Monday, San Antonio mayor Ron Nirenberg has declared Thursday, Aug. 30, to be “Manu Ginobili Day.”

Ginobili, a native of Argentina, spent 16 years with the Spurs and announced via Twitter, a week after reports circulated that he was “seriously considering” retiring, that he had indeed played his final minutes on an NBA court.

He’s widely considered to be a sure-thing Hall of Famer, and his adopted city is going to honor him accordingly.

“On Thursday, let’s honor a player who exemplified grits, sportsmanship, and the pure joy of the game,” Nirenberg wrote on Twitter.

Over his career in San Antonio, Ginobili averaged 13.3 points, 3.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.32 steals in 25.4 minutes per game, and is the Spurs’ all-time leader in 3-pointers made and steals. In his career 1,057 regular-season games, the accrued a .721 (762-295) winning percentage, the highest NBA history among players to appear in at least 1,000 games, according to the Spurs.

Details about potential Manu Ginobili Day festivities have yet to be released, but when Ginobili’s long-time teammate Tim Duncan retired in June 2016, the city likewise declared July 21st to be the first annual “Tim Duncan Day,” and many local businesses offered special deals in honor of Duncan’s uniform number, 21.

One such promotion entailed a local McDonald’s tacking on an extra nugget to its 20-nugget meals. Other deals included 21-cent tacos and $21 pet adoptions.

Given that Ginobili wore the number 20, it’s unclear why his day is Aug. 30, but we’ll shortly find out what’s in store.
