SYC - O - PHANT

ˈsikəˌfant orˈsikəfənt

Realizing that Steemit is an international platform with users of varying degrees of proficiency in the English language, or none at all, I thought it would be helpful to the Steemit community to highlight a useful English word now and then, one that may be applicable to their Steemit experience. English is a very expressive language. According to the Oxford English Dictionary modern English utilizes 171,476 words. The word sycophant is only one of them, but fret not, I will be posting many more useful and descriptive words. So stay tuned, Steemit vebivores!

sycophant - noun: a person who acts servile toward someone important in order to gain advantage.

sycophantic - adjective: (of a person or behavior) praising people in a way that is not sincere in order to gain some perceived favor, profit, or support from them.

If you call someone a sycophant or describe them as sycophantic (sycophancy) you are disapproving of their tendency to flatter those people more wealthy or powerful than themselves in order to secure a higher position in a social hierarchy.
