Poecilogale albinucha

What looks like a skunk, acts like a skunk, but isn’t a skunk?  It’s the African striped weasel, Poecilogale albinucha.

Living in the southern half of Africa, this nocturnal hunter will eat small mammals, birds, reptiles, and eggs.  Like most other weasels, the African striped weasel pounces on the back of its prey, bites its neck, and thrashes until the prey (usually rodents) is dead.  When this predator is tired, it will retire to its burrow, and curl up to sleep the day away.

Looks aren’t the only thing the African striped weasel shares with skunks.  The African striped weasel possesses an anal gland (most mustelids do) that it can use to spray a foul smelling fluid more than three feet in distance if it is feeling threatened.  Despite its smelly defense mechanism, the African striped weasel is well liked, especially by farmers, since it hunts the small rodents that would be a potential threat to their harvests.
