The name protozoa means "first animals". Protozoa have been found in almost every kind of soil environment from peat bogs to arid desert sands. They teem in the deep sea as well as near the surface of waters, and can be found even in frigid Arctic and Antarctic waters. The reason they are called "little animals" is because they act like animals...they hunt, eat, sleep, gather food like smaller microbes, bacteria and such. They mainly eat bacteria but they will eat each other as well. Some of my favorite protozoans are the ciliates! They have small hairs around their little bodies that help them swim and stick to things. Then there are the cute rotifers!! You will fall in love with them too! And the Copepods are the best too! I really can't wait for you to discover these little animals and get to know them! Believe it or not, if your water is clear and has these little beasties in it, then you know the water is safe from chemicals and harmful bacteria. The Copepods have eaten them all and are thriving! Above is the greatest of them all, these are the most feared of the protozoans. These slow moving monsters are so tiny they are hard to spot. They are slow and stealthy creeping up on their prey and "engulfing" them like the BLOB! They are really fun to watch as they hunt for unsuspecting ciliates or copepods.
Get those task packets done so you can look into the microscopes at a fascinating part of the world I bet you didn't think existed...
