- The unit of the female reproductive organ is the pistil or carpel.
- The carpel has three regions- Stigma, Style, and Ovary. An ovary contains an ovule.
- There are six different types of ovules in Angiosperms on the basis of the position of different parts.
- 1. Orthotropous 2. Anatropous 3. Hemitropous 4. Amphitropous 5. Campylotropous 6. Circinotropous
Explanation:
- Pinus has an Orthotropous type of ovule with a pollen chamber at the micropylar end.
- Orthotropous ovule: It is also called the Atropous ovule. The body of the atropous ovule is upright with micropyle, chalaza, and funicle falling in a straight line.
- Atropous ovules are known to occur in some 20 families of angiosperms like Polygonaceae, Piperaceae, etc.
Additional Information
- Anatropous ovule: The body is completely turned at a 180-degree angle so it is called an inverted ovule.
- This is the most common type of ovule and considered as a “typical ovule” of Angiosperms.
- Found in 80% of families of angiosperms.
- Campylotropous ovule: This type of ovule has a curved body but its curvature is less than that of the anatropous ovule. At such the micropyle and chalaza are not in a straight line and the funicle lies at right angles to the chalaza.
- Campylotropous ovules are known to occur in families like Capparidaceae, Chenopodiaceae, etc.
- Circinotropous Ovule: In this type of ovule, the funicle is very long and forms a complete circle around the body of the ovule. This type of ovule occurs in certain Plumbaginaceae (Plumbago) and Cactaceae (Opuntia, Phyllocactus).
