Jeremy Sarmiento is signing a new five-year contract with Brighton.

His existing deal was due to expire in June 2026.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi has a high regard for Sarmiento, who is 21 today (Friday).

The versatile attacker’s Brighton career has been interrupted so far by two significant injuries since joining from Benfica two years ago.

A hamstring issue sustained on his full Premier League debut at West Ham under former head coach Graham Potter in December 2021 required surgery which kept Sarmiento out for almost four months.

In March of this year, Sarmiento fractured a metatarsal bone in his right foot during a 3-1 friendly defeat for Ecuador in Australia. That foot injury sidelined him for the rest of the season, which culminated in Brighton finishing sixth in the table to qualify for the Europa League.

Sarmiento has made a total of 19 first-team appearances for the club, including 12 last season under De Zerbi.

The former England youth international, born in Spain, has also earned 13 caps for Ecuador since making his debut for the homeland of his parents in October 2021.

Sarmiento isn’t in Spaniard Felix Sanchez’s Ecuador squad with Brighton team-mates Moises Caicedo and Pervis Estupinan for friendlies against Bolivia in the early hours of Sunday UK time and Costa Rica three days later.

He has been left out of the first home games for the former coach of Qatar to concentrate on his recovery.

Sarmiento is expected to be fit to return for Brighton’s pre-season programme, which includes matches in the US at the end of July against Chelsea, Brentford and Newcastle in the Premier League’s ‘Summer Series’.
