The Mangrove Horseshoe Crab (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda). Sometimes available in the trade, though most horseshoe crabs purchased are the related Atlantic horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus). As the name implies, it is often found in mangrove forests in the Indo-West Pacific region where the water is about half strength sea water. Not easily kept in home aquariums, these creatures need very large, mature tanks with 4-5 inches of sand in order to scavenge for food (mostly small crustaceans and annelids).
