Rain Checks

Reader, Shannon, reminded me about rain checks yesterday. So I thought I’d fill you all in on rain checks  .  Do you know about rain checks?  Rain checks are offered when a store is out of a particular item.  The rain check allows you to buy that particular item for the sale price at a later date.  Many stores use them including Target, Ralphs, Vons/Pavilions, and Stater Brothers.

Here’s how it works…. So say yesterday when you went to Ralphs for the tritip or soda and they were sold out, when you check out tell them that you’d like a rain check for the tritip or soda.  The cashier or bag boy will write you a rain check. Then you use the rain check at a later date when the item is in stock.  Just give the cashier the rain check when you buy it.  I usually put the rain check on top of the item.  Cashiers have told me that that is the most helpful way for them.  Different stores have different expirations on the rain checks.  Here’s the expirations that I know of:

Ralphs- 60 days

Vons- no expiration date on the rain check but I believe it is a year.

Target- 90 days.  They don’t issue rain checks for everything that is on sale.  I figure it never hurts to ask.

Stater Brothers-30 days

Albertson’s- 30 days

So next time you’re at the store and the item you want is out of stock, ask for a rain check.  Then all you have to do is remember you have it and use it. 🙂
