Abner earns CSC Academic All-District honors

University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball player Derionah Abner named to CSC Academic All-District Team

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland  – Derionah Abner of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team has been named to the 2023 Academic All District® Volleyball Team as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC).

The 2023 Academic All-District® Volleyball teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic Awards program separately recognizes volleyball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Nominees must have a 3.50 grade point average, played in 90 percent of the team's sets, and started in 66 percent of the team's matches. The awards and voting procedures also recognize the student-athlete's on-court success when factoring in selections.

Abner, a graduate student from Orlando, Florida, was named the All-MEAC Second Team and was one of nine Hawks to earn MEAC All-Academic honors.

Abner finished her final year with UMES at a kill count of 240 for the season along with a .213 hitting percentage.  She also had 45 blocks and 145 digs in 92 sets played this season. On October 1 against Howard, Abner recorded her 500th kill in a UMES uniform. Her season high of 18 kills was against Gardner-Webb on Sept. 8 while posting a season-best .619 hitting percentage against Marist on Sept. 1. Abner ranked No. 10 in MEAC in points per set with 3.00 and No. 9 in MEAC with 2.66 kills per set.

Abner helped lead the Hawks to a final record of 16-12 overall with an 8-6 mark in conference play along with a win in the opening round of the MEAC Tournament.
