Baseball Upsets No. 1 Wake Forest

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team upset No. 1 Wake Forest on Tuesday night, 4-3 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

According to our records, this is the second time the Spartans have defeated a No. 1 team when UNCG upset No. 1 North Carolina 7-6 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on April 18, 2006. In addition, this is first win over Wake Forest since March, 26, 2019, when the Spartans defeated the Demon Deacons, 9-5 in Greensboro.

The last time the Spartans earned a victory over a ranked opponent was on March 16, 2021 against No. 13 Virginia Tech, 7-2 in Blacksburg, Va.

The 4-0 start to the 2024 season is the best start for UNCG since 2013, when the team also started out 4-0.

The Spartans never allowed the Demon Deacons to lead in Tuesday's game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With Julien Peissel as the Spartans starter, he delivered four strikeouts in his five innings of action. With bases loaded in the Spartans half of the second inning, Haiden Leffew threw four balls in the pitch count, walking Mitchell Smith to score Matt Venuto, giving the Spartans the 1-0 lead.

Wake Forest tied the game up in the fourth inning after Tate Ballestero grounded out to second base for an RBI (1-1). However, between Peissel and Noah Chapman on the mound, Wake Forest would be scoreless in the next three innings.

UNCG added another run in the sixth inning after Smith hit a double down the left field line to send Matt Venuto home (2-1).

The Spartans widened its lead in the seventh inning. With runners occupying all bases, Jake Ogden stepped up to bat, sending a ball up the middle on a 1-0 count, scoring Trey Truitt and Zachary Walsh (4-1). These were the final runs for UNCG in the contest.

The Demon Deacons were able to cut the deficit to one in the eighth inning with a couple runs. However, Luke Thomson was able to take care of business in the ninth inning, granting Wake Forest zero hits and delivering one strikeout.

NOTES:
  • Winning pitcher, Chapman recorded three strikeouts in his 2.2 innings only giving up one hit.
  • The Spartans had four RBI, while the Deacs had three.
  • UNCG had four batters hit by pitches in the contest.
  • The Spartans pitching staff allowed only four hits on the day by the Demon Deacons.
  • This is the least amount of hits allowed by the Spartans since Feb. 25, 2023 when UNCG gave up just three hits against Notre Dame in a 12-0 win.
