GOLDEN WATTLE TREE - ALTHOUGH NATIVE TO AUSTRALIA DEFINITELY LOVES OTHER WARM, DRY PLACES INCLUDING OUR SOCAL FARM! This tree, native to Australia, grows on our little farm in the mountains here in Somis, California (Zone 10A - southern California). The tree flourishes in sandy soil and is an evergreen shrub/tree. It is very drought tolerant and is fast growing. It can grow 1 1/2 to 5 feet a year! Wattle trees can get to a height of 10 to 30 feet tall - ours is about at the top end of that height scale and is just lovely to see out my kitchen window! The Golden Wattle tree is characterized by its abundance of golden-yellow flower blossoms - gorgeous little puff balls - that fill the tree in springtime. And the bees love it making it a wonderful pollinator plant for the garden area!

Plant in full sun or part shade and as long as the soil has drainage the tree will be happy! Water moderately throughout the year, waiting until the soil is dry.

For anyone with bare land, wattles are a quick screening plant to use while slower plants establish. This tree is like a weeping willow making soft - almost ocean wavey - sounds when the breeze comes over the mountain.

Propagating by seed:
"Scarify" the seeds first, either rubbing them between two pieces of sand paper which thins the coat of the seed allowing water to penetrate or nick the top of the seed without damaging the soft part of the seed. You can sow them directly in well-draining soil by making a depression with your finger. Sow 3-5 seeds in each depression and lightly cover with sand. Expect germination after 3-4 weeks.
