Ian Maatsen’s loan move to Borrusia Dortmund became officially official today, with the 21-year-old left back moving to Germany for at least the rest of the season.
What happens afterwards will be decided later. BVB reportedly do not have either an option nor an obligation to make the move permanent, but at the moment that still seems like a definite possibility as an eventual outcome before next season.
Chelsea did extend Maatsen’s contract by a couple years, to 2026 before he headed out the door, so that does leave pretty much every option in play as far as his long-term future’s concerned.

Good luck for the rest of 23/24, Ian!
Maatsen, who’s barely featured for Chelsea this season despite our injury issues at his nominal position (i.e. left back), has found plenty of success on his loan adventures before, at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and especially last year at Burnley. The Bundesliga will pose a different and tougher challenge, but hopefully he can rise to it.
Good luck, Ian!
