It was found in 1977 near Fremont, CA and in 1984 near Palo Alto, CA. It could have been introduced with Eastem Oysters in the late 19th or early 20th century. However, it has a planktotrophic larva and could have been introduced more recently with ballast water. It is an ectoparisite that feeds on the body fluids of clams and other invertebrates. As recently as20l2,the genus Odetta was used by Lee II and Reusser in the Atlas of Nonindigenous Species Information System, although they mention that WoRMS does not list it as a valid name. Fofonov et al. (2003) uses Boonea in their NEMISIS website; however, J. Carlton, one of the authors of that page later as editor of Light's Manual (2007), accepts J. H. Mclean's use of Odena. Other sources have continued to use the genus Odostomio. In our case, I think consistency is important and we can always change the name in the future as more information is available in the literature.
