A comprehensive analysis of photosynthetic pathways in relation to phylogeny and elevational distribution was conducted in Bromeliaceae, an ecologically diverse Neotropical family containing large numbers of both terrestrial and epiphytic species. Tissue carbon isotope ratio (δ 13 C) was used to determine the occurrence of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and C3 photosynthesis in 1893 species, representing 57% of species and all 56 genera in the family. The frequency of δ 13 C values showed a strongly bimodal distribution: 1074 species (57%) had values more negative than −20‰ (mode = −26.7‰), typical of predominantly daytime carbon fixation via the C3 pathway, whereas 819 species (43%) possessed values less negative than −20‰ (mode = −13.3‰), indicative of predominantly nocturnal fixation of carbon via the CAM pathway. Amongst the six almost exclusively terrestrial subfamilies in Bromeliaceae, Brocchinioideae, Lindmanioideae and Navioideae consisted entirely of C3 species, with CAM species being restricted to Hechtioideae (all species of Hechtia tested), Pitcairnioideae (all species belonging to a xeric clade comprising Deuterocohnia, Dyckia and Encholirium) and Puyoideae (21% of Puya spp.). Of the other two subfamilies, in the overwhelmingly epiphytic (plus lithophytic) Tillandsioideae, 28% of species possessed CAM photosynthesis, all restricted to the derived genus Tillandsia and tending towards the more extreme epiphytic 'atmospheric' life-form. In Bromelioideae, with comparable numbers of terrestrial and epiphytic species, 90% of taxa showed CAM; included in these are the first records of CAM photosynthesis in Androlepis, Canistropsis, Ursulaea. With respect to elevational gradients, the greatest number of C3 bromeliad species were found at mid-elevations between 500 and 1500 m, whereas the frequency of CAM species declined monotonically with increasing elevation. However, in Puya, at least ten CAM species have been recorded at elevations > 3000 m, showing that CAM photosynthesis is not necessarily incompatible with low temperatures. This survey identifies five major origins of CAM photosynthesis at a higher taxonomic level in Bromeliaceae, but future phylogenetic work is likely to reveal a more fine-scale pattern of gains and losses of this trait, especially in ecologically diverse and widely distributed genera such as Tillandsia and Puya.

Floristic Checklist of the Mache-Chindul Mountains of Northwestern Ecuador

An inventory of the vascular plants of the Mache-Chindul Mountains is presented from collecting expeditions beginning in 1991 to present. The Mache-Chindul Mountains reach an elevation of 800 meters and are located in northwestern Ecuador in the southernmost part of the province of Esmeraldas (00º21’N 79º44’W) and the northernmost part of the province of Manabí (00º25’S 79º57’W). The Pacific Ocean lies 20-30 km due west and the equator transects the middle of this mountain range. The Mache-Chindul range occupies about 400 km2 and harbors the last large tract of coastal wet forest in Ecuador, an area less than 4% of its original size. Important protected areas include the Reserva Ecológica Mache-Chindul, Bilsa Biological Station, Bosque Protector Cerro Pata de Pájaro, and the Reserva Lalo Loor. An inventory of the 6,000 collections made from the region has resulted in the enumeration of 1,346 vascular plant taxa that are native to the study area; non-native and introduced species were not heavily sampled and nearly 2,400 collections (40%) are only determined to genus. A biogeographic analysis is presented based on 1,318 native species. A total of 162 species (12%) are endemic to the western lowlands of coastal Ecuador. The Mache-Chindul flora shares 865 species (66%) with the lowlands of Amazonia, across the barrier of the Andes, and 957 species (73%) are shared with the Chocó region of coastal Colombia. A total of 814 species (61%) extend farther to the north into Mesoamerica. The botanical explorations in the Mache-Chindul Mountains have resulted in the publication of two new monotypic genera and 33 species recently described as new to science. An annotated list of species by family is given that includes the publication citation, a representative specimen, elevation range, habitat preference, and phytogeographic region for each species.

Key words: Bromeliaceae, Bolivia, checklist, endemic INTRODUCTION The checklist presented here provides updated information on the diversity and distribution of Bromeliaceae in Bolivia. Numerous collections in the last two decades, especially from fieldwork by S.G. Beck, H. & L. Hromadnik, M. Kessler, P. Ibisch, R. V iisquez, and T. Kromer, have resulted in the addition of many new records for the flora since the last summary of * Corresponding author. Bolivian bromeliads (Smith 1969). These include seven genera (Araeococcus, Catopsis, Deinacanthon, Greigia, Mezobromelia, Pepinia, and Werauhia) and 125 species. Nevertheless, it is clear that the record is incomplete, and further surveys are needed to clarify taxonomic problems and fragmentary distribution records. METHODS The following herbaria were surveyed for collections from Bolivia: Herbario Nacional de Bo201 Volume 20(2) 1999 SELBYANA 202 livia, La paz (LPB), Museo de Historia Natural Noel Kempff, Santa Cruz (USZ), The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota (SEL), the Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis (MO), Institute of Botany, University of Vienna (WU), Utrecht Univerisity, Utrecht (U), and the personal Herbarium of R. Vasquez, Santa Cruz (VASQ). Principal literature references used were the Flora Neotropica Monograph Bromeliaceae treatments (Smith & Downs 1974, 1977, 1979), a preliminary country checklist by R. Foster (1958), a country-level family treatment by L.B. Smith (1969), and a modem epiphyte survey by P. Ibisch (1996). While an attempt was made to verify specimens of all taxa included in the list, the occurrence of some species in Bolivia is only known to us from literature sources or from identifications made by other botanists. For these, an indication of the citation or determiner source is made in the list. The checklist was compiled from a database prepared at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens which includes approximately 2250 herbarium records. Author abbreviations follow Brummitt and Powell (1992), abbreviations ofliterature citations follow Stafteu and Cowan (1976-1988) for books, and Lawrence et al. (1968) for journals. Herbarium acronyms follow Holmgren et al. (1990). All basionyms are included, jiS well as all species-level names based on types from Bolivia and pertinent recent synonymy. Distribution at the department level in Bolivia and the elevational range where the species occur are listed after each species, as well as the type collection, country where the type was collected, and where possible, an additional voucher specimen. The word "Endemic" is added if the species is wholly confined to the political boundaries of Bolivia. Nomenclature used in the checklist follows that used in An Alphabetic list of Bromeliad Binomials (Luther & Sieff 1998) which recognizes three recently created or resurrected genera: Racinaea (Spencer & Smith 1993), Werauhia (Grant 1995), and Pepinia (Varadarajan & Gilmartin 1988). Species which formerly belonged to Streptocalyx can now be found in Aechmea (Smith & Spencer 1992). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Although Bolivia's species totals still rank below those of other Andean countries (see Holst 1994), the number of genera (21, see TABLE 1) is second only to Venezuela. This high number reflects the unique biogeographical position of Bolivia at the meeting point of the humid northern and central Andes, the dry southern Andes, TABLE 1. The 281 recorded species from the country (TABLE 1; APPENDIX) is still well below the number to be expected. Based on a species/area relationship in comparison to Peru, Ibisch (1996) estimated a total 300-350 bromeliad species for Bolivia. Considering the increase in species numbers in the last decades (on average, about four new species have been found per year since 1969), this estimate seems realistic. In 1997, seven new species were described from Bolivia (Till & Hromadnik 1997, Luther 1997, Ibisch et al. 1997, Gross 1997, Ehlers 1997, Ehlers & Hromadnik 1997, Till 1997); in 1998, six new taxa were described (Luther 1998a, 1998b), among them, three Greigia species; and in 1999 at least 8 new species have been published (lbisch et al. 1999, Luther 1999, Ibisch et al. 1999, Kessler et al. 1999). Among the two latter papers are five new Fosterella species. Almost 43% of the Bolivian bromeliads are endemic to the country (TABLE 1). Political subdivsions and broad elevational zones. particularly those in the subfamily Pitcairnioideae which has three genera (Deuterocohnia, Fosterella, Puya) with centers of diversity in Bolivia (Ibisch 1996). Eleven out of 15 Deuterocohnia species, 20 of approximately 25 Fosterella species occur in Bolivia, and 47 of the nearly 200 species of Puya are endemic. Somewhat surprisingly, the number of Pitcairnia species (15) is low compared to other Andean countries. This may be the result of inadequate sam- 203 pIing or the fact that some morphologically and ecologically variable species (e.g., P. cardenasii, P. crassa, P. trianae) may include more than one species. Another striking feature of the Bolivian bromeliad flora is the low number of large, green, tank bromeliads in the Tillandsioideae and Bromelioideae in the genera Guzmania, Tillandsia, Vriesea, and Aechmea. While this is in part due to inadequate sampling, these groups have their centers of diversity elsewhere; southeastern Brazil for Aechmea and Vriesea, and the northern Andes for Guzmania and Tillandsia. Three departments contain more than 100 species each, La Paz, Cochabamba, and Santa Cruz (TABLE 2). While these appear to be the best sampled (ca. 1700 ofthe 2250 collection records in our database come from there), they are also the most varied topographically. At the other end of the sampling spectrum, our database contains only two Bromeliaceae collections from Oruro and 10 from Pando. While nearly all localities merit further collection for new Bromeliaceae, priorities include the humid mid-elevation forests (1500-2500 m) in La Paz, semi-humid forests at the transition of dry, rainshadowed valleys to humid montane forest in almost any valley system in La Paz and adjacent Cochabamba, and the interior portions of Ambor6 National Park in Santa Cruz. Although bromeliads occur at low densities in the Amazonian lowlands, a thorough search in Pando and the Amazonian part of Beni should yield elements of the Brazilian bromeliad flora which are not yet known from Bolivia. Likewise, the dry Chaco lowland and foothill forests of Chuquisaca and Tarija are likely to yield new discoveries. In most need of study taxonomically are the terrestrial and saxicolous genera, particularly Puya and Pitcairnia, and the largely epiphytic genus Tillandsia. 2.
