Language has a significant role in the identification of one’s own identity, culture, behavioral pattern, society and tradition. Since language is the recollection of human thoughts generated in particular culture within a particular period of time, it upholds the nature of that culture present in the society for a long time. There are a large number of Bengali dialects that depict the cultural, historical and linguistic pattern of a particular social class. According to linguistics dialect refers to a variety of a language that is characteristic of a particular group of the language’s speakers as well as social class. Dialect as a regionally or socially distinctive variety of language, identified by a particular set of words or grammatical structures sometime separates particular groups of people from each other sharing same national identity. This writing mainly focuses on the reasons of dialectical variations of Bengali from historical as well as cultural or linguistics perspectives.

A socio-linguistics view of the resent mixed form used in Bengali2009 •
As a social phenomenon, language is frequently influenced by different social codes, orders, and customs of society. Apart from the structural variety of language, many social dimensions of languages, develop over the time, occur. Nowadays Bengali- a rich language of south Asia- is encountering such social dimensional changes, as it interacts with its complex socio-cultural components. More elaborately, Bengali exhibits frequently different sociolinguistic characteristics such as code switching and code mixing, bilingualism and multilingualism, social dialect and dialectal free variation, language maintenance and language shift. This paper provides a brief description of sociolinguistic terms mentioned above from the point of view of the recent changes in Bengali. Key words: speech community, sociolect, code switching code mixing, code shifting, language shiftDOI: 10.3329/dujl.v1i2.3719 The Dhaka University Jaurnal of Linguistics: Vol. 1 No.2 Augus, 2008 Page: 115-124
The root issue behind UNESCO’s declaration of 21 February as International Mother Language Day was the violent socio-political nationalist movement of the Bengali linguistic speakers of East Pakistan in 1952 against Urdu linguistic hegemony. This also had impact on West Bengal, India as East Pakistan and West Bengal both shared the same linguistic and cultural heritage. Bengali race has a history of rich cultural and linguistic heritage and it first received its onslaught on race, culture and language when the state of Bengal was bifurcated by the British. It is regrettable that this onslaught on the language and culture continues still in post independent India. Today it faces hegemonic threats even in its own state from dominant languages such as Hindi and English. Employment opportunities, globalization, anglicised messaging and advertisements pose a threat to the importance as well as to its basic lexis. It is doubted whether an attempt to marginalise the culture, the base for any identity is at underplay. No proper linguistic policy either at the state or central level exists to prevent its degenerative indication. Why so? When Bengali is internationally recognised as a major language in the world, why is it not given the deserved respect in Her motherland. Although it is not as easy as it is said, but the promotion of multilingualism is needed at the level of policies and through academic curriculum in order to preserve the treasure inherent in the cultural repertoire of any linguistic identity or gradually languages might become redundant even to its user.

Standard Dialect Ideology in Bangladesh: A Field Study2014 •
Standard dialect ideology (hereafter SD ideology) as a significant concept in linguistic anthropology affects linguistic behavior and belief system of speakers of a speech community. In addition, SD ideology appears to fetishize ‘standard’ variety and stigmatize ‘non-standard’ variety of a language. In this study, we attempt to explore the symptoms of SD ideology in the linguistic behavior of Bangla speakers in Bangladesh. Field data suggest that SD ideology exists in the psyche of Bangla speakers in distinctive forms and seems to manifest itself differently in rural and urban areas of Bangladesh.

Changing Contours: The Interference of the Mother Tongue on English Speaking Sylheti Bengali2020 •
The Sylheti Bangla, a variety of Bangla language is primarily spoken in the Sylhet District of Bangladesh, Barak Valley of Assam, Tripura, especially in North Tripura. The systematic perusal of English spoken by Sylheti Bangla speakers demonstrates that it carries a huge difference with English (RP) especially with respect to pronunciation, syllable structure, stress, intonation. The disparities between Sylheti English and English (RP) are because of a number of divergent variances between Sylheti Bangla and English which often makes the acquisition of English an arduous job for the Sylheti speakers. The errors committed by Sylheti speakers during their speaking in English can be attributed to the interference of the rule of the mother tongue in learning the second language. This interference can be of phonological, morphological and sentence structure. However, the domain of this paper is exclusive to phonological interference of L1 on L2 through the contrastive analysis of the phonological aspects of Sylheti Bangla and English (RP). This paper intends to improve the status of English teaching-learning process compared to contemporary practices. Thus, it aspires to contribute to the theory of second language acquisition with a particular focus on learning English by Sylheti speakers.

EXPLORING BHAIRAB DIALECT VIS-À-VIS STANDARD BANGLAThe present comprehensive study investigates the differences and uniqueness of the dialect of Bhairab, a prominent commercial area of Bangladesh located in Kishoregonj district in comparison with the Standard Bangla. Language usually varies after every particular distance throughout the world. Most often these variations and differentiations are found in the day-today use of supra-segmental elements of oral language. This study compares some of the traditional, social and public words and sentences of Bhairab dialect with the spelling and pronunciation of standard Bangla. At the same time, it aims at the changes found in tone and intonation in the dialect of Bhairab. Accordingly 50 respondents participated in the survey and five professionals were interviewed to collect data. The natural instinct of humans is always inclined to sustain the traditional culture, linguistic identity and nationalism. Regarding that, dialectal sustainability also significantly matters to uphold one's own culture and language. The central objective is to bring out the traditionalism and pastoral of a same language in any dialect other than its standard version. The paper also tends to show the profusion of some specific sounds that are used by the inhabitants of Bhairab.

Linguistic Identity with Special Reference to Western Hindi DialectsLinguistic identity is the common bond that people share when they can understand each other in their native tongues, even if they share no other common heritage. Linguistic identity gets trickier when you’re talking about two people who may share linguistic bonds but come from mutually hostile ethnic groups. With racial and ethnic identity, linguistic identity does not exist in isolation; it is frequently yet one more facet of how a person identifies. There’s what we might call “reverse linguistic identity.” As Boas demonstrated over a century ago, everyone has at least three independent identities: race (in the traditional, not the anthropological sense), culture, and language. Language (or linguistic) identity take to mean the speech community with which someone is identified. This is probably always a historical phenomenon, either of birth or of personal choice. Most subjects to personal choice are culture and language, for instance, a given person identifies with, or belongs ...
This paper explores the linguistic as well as sociolinguistic factors or criteria used by linguists and sociolinguists to help define both terms with examples of relevant language varieties and dialects in addition to the sociopolitical factors determining the difference between the standard variety, which is considered a language per se, and the related varieties, whether they are distinctive in their phonetic or syntactic form or similar.
