Anoplotherium commune, an even-toed ungulate that lived in France during the Late Eocene. Illustration from Louis Figuier's The World Before the Deluge, 1867 American edition. Cuvier thought it may have lived like an otter, using its long tail as a rudder as it swam underwater in search of aquatic plant roots. Modern scientists think it may have used its tail for balance, as it stood on its hind legs to browse on tree leaves.
