A giant in American journalism in the vanguard of "The Greatest Generation" reveals his World War II experiences in this National Geographic book. Walter Cronkite, an obscure twenty-three-year-old United Press wire service reporter, married Betsy Maxwell on March 30, 1940, following a four-year courtship. She proved to be the love of his life, and their marriage lasted happily until her death in 2005. But before Walter and Betsy Cronkite celebrated their second anniversary, he became a credentialed war correspondent, preparing to leave her behind to go overseas. The couple spent months apart in the summer and fall of 1942, as Cronkite sailed on convoys to England and North Africa across the submarine-infested waters of the North Atlantic. After a brief December leave in New York City spent with his young wife, Cronkite left again on assignment for England. This time, the two would not be reunited until the end of the war in Europe. Cronkite would console himself during their absence by writing her long, detailed letters-sometimes five in a week-describing his experiences as a war correspondent, his observations of life in wartime Europe, and his longing for her. Betsy Cronkite carefully saved the letters, copying many to circulate among family and friends. More than a hundred of Cronkite's letters from 1943-45 (plus a few earlier letters) survive. They reveal surprising and little known facts about this storied public figure in the vanguard of "The Greatest Generation." They chronicle both a great love story and a great war story, as told by the reporter who would go on to become anchorman for the CBS Evening News with a reputation as "the most trusted man in America."

Excellent book that features Cronkites letters to his wife. In these letters Cronkite shares what his troubles are to his wife, how he misses her and his aspirations for them when they get back together after the war. These letters are very much in vein of nearly every soldier who went to war at this time. Recently my brother started scanning in letters that my dad had sent to my mother during WWII. Its remarkable how similar they are in context. These men did not want to be there but would rather be home starting a family and living an otherwise normal life. Cronkite made the best of things. He advanced his career and began his climb to being a household name in the years to come. This book is a good way to get to know him before his fame and he never let that fame overcome who he was and where he came from. And that's the way it was in 1942-1945.

It was a good book. It wasn't a super page-turner for me, but it was well written and interesting. It wasn't as detailed as I would have liked, but I understand that censoring would likely have limited what Mr. Cronkite could write home. The thing I didn't like about it was that the chapters were so very long. There were plenty of stopping points, but I am someone who likes to finish a chapter in one setting.

Walter Cronkite begins the book by telling the story of how he entered the reporting industry. At the time the Great Depression was in full swing, Europe was being devastated by the Nazis on one front, England was being bombed, the Japanese were on an Imperialistic land grab and preparing to bomb the United States at Pearl Harbor. Belgium was soon to be overrun and all was in a state of flux.

Cronkite sails on ships in the North Atlantic and heavily engaged by German U-Boats. Over 1,000 cargo and troop carriers were being sunk in the north Atlantic during this time. Then Cronkite and his reporting buddies join up with the 8th Army Air Force n England, after a brief stay in North Africa, and after some training they are allowed to fly with the bombers on their missions over France and Germany. That was at a time when we were losing 6 out of 10 planes on these missions. A minimum of 60 brave aviators and any brass or newspapermen who dared fly on these suicide missions were in Harm's Way. And Cronkite was one of them.
With his portable typewriter, he wrote his wife a letter everyday and sometimes more than one a day. He described the happenings and his personal experiences during the war years between 1943 and 1945 that he was active in Europe without ever returning home even for a short visit.

He wrote such beautiful love letters to his wife and described such horrid scenes of war. It defies his imagination that man can kill at will and still love so deeply, all on the same day. Read it now so you will fully understand the memory of man at war and the inhumane conditions he witnessed while longing just to return home to the United States and live in peace with his wife.. A very touching story.

The letters are an interesting way to witness history, and a personal glimpse into the young life of a giant of journalism. However, they were repetitive and to the extent that they describe Conkite's loneliness and despair over his separation from his wife and his longing for the war to end -- they make the same point over and over again. I enjoyed the letters for their educational value, but by the end of the book, I could not wait to finish it and move on to another book. However, to grandson Walter IV, good job and thanks for sharing.

The book is just what it says, letters home to his wife. He writes a letter the way most of us do, what the weather is, who we went out to dinner with and where we went. Since they are letters to his wife, whom he misses very much, they are, for me, a little to personal.

Since the letters were written over sixty years ago all his references to the other reporters by name are not very relevant today, if you have even heard of them.

I greatly admire Walter Cronkite, his letters did not add much to what I already knew about him.

I purchased this book as a gift for my husband who is a fan of this great newscaster. I have not personally read the book, but he raves about it.

Excellent read. Very interesting and moving. The level of commitment and dedication to this country displayed by this generation only goes to confirm they were the greatest generation. Unselfishly giving and asking nothing. We have a lot to learn from them.

Before each letter is an explanation of the letter. Some are good, some are almost meaningless and useless. The letters are not a thorough record and the authors often guess and what Walter was trying to say. Too bad the letters back to Walter were missing. It was a good attempt to capture the era but it comes across as an attempt by the authors to profit from the Cronkite name.
