Review

"If you have been hoping that change and disruption are decelerating, you need a wake-up call and a plan! Disrupt Disruption is exactly that wake-up call and guidebook for creating a plan. In an amazingly concise book, Pascal Finette lays out the dynamics of disruption, how it threatens established business, and how to lead your organization to disrupt disruption. While every decade has had massive forces pressuring business as usual, this one will likely be even more challenging. AI, climate tech, and global realignment will pressure every company. Prepare yourself for these changes by reading this insightful and actionable book."

Barak Berkowitz, Experienced Tech Executive and ex-Director of Operations and Strategy of MIT Media Lab

Brilliantly written and chock full of enlightening examples, start your reading here if you are even considering undertaking disruptive change."

William Pasmore, Ph.D., Professor, Columbia University and SVP, Center for Creative Leadership

"A lucid, insightful, and practical guide to help you assess possible futures so you can navigate your way to your optimum outcome. Essential and entertaining reading for every leader in this volatile and uncertain world."

"Brilliant read from cover to cover. Pascal Finette has a unique gift in his ability to envision the future in a 100X way and then translate that into practical, actionable advice for leaders. He has long been my favorite speaker and thought leader on the topic of disruption, and this deep dive read is a gift to those who wish to take innovation to the next level."

Mary Grove, Managing Partner at Bread & Butter Ventures

"We have witnessed an accelerating pace of change that is reshaping every business, industry, market, and society around the world. New waves of technology, globalization, and demographics—the primary forces of disruption—shift market power among competitors, challenge existing business models, realign trade patterns, restructure supply chains, and more. In this overwhelming environment, the game has been changed and is being rapidly won by players that seem to transcend the accepted rules. What are these new rules? 'Disrupt Disruption' provides vital insights and strategies to ensure your company cannot only survive but also thrive."

Gil Forer, Lead Partner, Digital and Business Disruption | Global Markets, Ernst & Young LLP

"Pascal Finette has developed a clear and actionable approach that leaders can take to leverage the disruptions of exponential change successfully. He builds on his own consulting experience and a deep plunge through the literature, distilling it all into clear, communicable, and usable strategy."

Alan Lesgold, Emeritus Professor, School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh

Over nearly three decades in technology, Pascal Finette has accrued all the experience you’d want in a high-level strategic advisor. He started on the net before there was a web browser, learned his way through founding a series of technology startups, launched a consulting firm to support entrepreneurs in scaling their own, and built a portfolio investing in early-stage tech companies. Pascal also held leadership positions at era-defining powerhouses Google, eBay, and Mozilla, and he was the faculty chair for entrepreneurship and open innovation at Singularity University. He’s worn many hats and knows what needs to go on in the brain under each of them to lead effectively.

What makes Pascal truly one-of-a-kind, however, is his ability to translate all of this experience into teachable insights, principles, and practices. This enables him to help corporate leaders and entrepreneurs do what they all say they want to do: transform their organizations, build what matters, tackle truly meaningful challenges & create lasting, positive change in the world.

Pascal brings refreshing honesty and a zero tolerance for bullshit to the buzzy intersection of technology, global impact, and culture, where he’s established himself as a sought-after speaker and a uniquely perceptive communicator of hard truths and creative provocations. As the founder of the boutique advisory firm be radical and the posse leader at TheHeretic.org — where he’s behind an opinionated newsletter and podcast with tens of thousands of subscribers — Pascal inspires, educates, and empowers leaders to make sense of accelerating change, envision the future of exponential technology, identify new opportunities, and develop successful, future-robust business strategies.

Relentlessly focused on amplifying positive change and the impact of other changemakers, Pascal is also the founder of the nonprofit organizations Mentor for Good and The Women’s Impact Alliance, and he is a trained Co-Active executive coach working with clients to unlock their full leadership potential.

Pascal is the advisory board chair of EY’s wavespace, a member of Pearson’s digital advisory board, and the jury chair for the science and innovation management category at the Falling Walls Foundation.

I found this book easy to read, and full of insightful chapters. With 'disruption' being the focus, I was a bit skeptical, as it has become such a buzzword in the business community. However, Pascal addresses this concern early on, and proceeds to explore disruption in a practical and applicable way that any person can understand and relate to.

I loved Pascal’s encouragement to be curious and not write off things that don’t seem immediately useful. That could be the next big invention to change the world. Easy to remember business stories and examples. the biggest thing I took away was asking “Isn’t that interesting?” several times each day.

Pianette goes straight to the point in his book, offering insights from transformative leaders and presenting a clear roadmap for organizations to navigate the future through foresight, disruptive innovation, and transformation. While it's targeted for corporate leaders, I believe founders too can draw lessons. I'd highlight that its approach to upskilling, which is presented as Key #5 for transformation, seems rather traditional. It leans towards curated content-based learning and assessments, rather than the more future skills focused project-based personalized learning with mentorship and pertinent feedback. For those interested in the latter, I'd recommend “Lifelong Kindergarten” by Michael Resnick (2018) from MIT Media Lab.

If you're seeking to challenge traditional ways of thinking and keep up with the fast-changing business world, I strongly recommend this book. It's an amazing read, thanks to Finette's engaging and insightful writing. He shares some great ideas that are sure to inspire anyone who wants to break free from the mold of innovation and disruption, and prepare their organization for potential futures by identifying weak signals.

Pascal created an engaging read that explains concepts to identify and prepare for changes, or disruptions, impacting the future. With the speed of change and the increase in technological advances we are experiencing, businesses have to be able to recognize signals of change and respond accordingly. I could go on and on about the ideas shared and the thought-provoking content, but it wouldn’t do it justice. Get the book! Mine is full of notes and highlights!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not about flashy strategies, but the key to great teams & solutions

"Common sense is not common practice" is a great takeaway for me from the book. It perfectly illustrates how Finette provides a different approach to creating organisational success. In a world where change is constant, you find plenty of sources encouraging you to disrupt. The book provides a refreshing narrative that looks beyond the trend of business and, instead, looks deeper at the underlying principles of good business. In that sense, it outlines that to disrupt is rarely a sensible strategy for any existing organisation. Much rather it's about understanding how you can continuously outperform any threat of being disrupted. And in doing so pursue "continuous relevance". The book does not only establish that awareness, but it provides an actionable guideline of how to enact it in your team. It's a must read for anyone who intends to build and maintain organisational success!
