Editorial Reviews

Review

I like this book more than the Gilbert and Large because it does a better job overall balancing coverage of politics with coverage of social, economic and cultural themes.

When choosing a book I look for one that tries to balance history, economics, politics, society, and culture without overly embracing one of these to the neglect of something else. That is no easy task and I believe that this book does that successfully and the revisions continue that tradition.

Needed it for class but it’s also really interesting to read it

Clearly the best text on the subject. Filled with graphics and maps. It covers the political, social, and cultural history of the era with perspectives from the famous rulers to the common person. It is organized strictly chronological. This leads to areas being split up between chapters. For example, the Russian Revolution is covered in one chapter, Lenin and the NEP later, then Stalin later on in the text. Just the right amount of detail for the text not to be overbearing with great recommendations at the end of the chapter if you want to read more on certain subject presented.

I ordered a used copy and I don't know who to complain to but this book came in wet. This book was boxed with another book that I ordered and the second one was bone dry. The box that the books came in was also dry. There was no water inside the box either. Just this book was wet. I am so confused (but also relieved that my other book was not damaged by water). That being said, I am disappointed and expect better.

As far as history textbooks go it is very well written, extensively sourced, and has a good index. Apart from that Paxton writes in an impartial manner which is refreshing, rarely espousing his own ideology or given to excessive poetics. I am giving this 5 for the suggested readings at the end of each chapter which is quite extensive for those who wish to approach the study of 20th century Europe with more depth.

I had to buy this ebook for my Contemporary Europe 1914 course. I barely used this book except when I had to get evidence from it for my essay about a soldier's life during WWII. The reason I gave it 3 stars was because I only read it once and I learn more about Europe in the Twentieth Century on Youtube.
