RAF Airfields of World War 2 provides comprehensive coverage of the airfields, bases and squadrons of the RAF's three main frontline commands in Britain during World War 2 - Fighter, Bomber and Coastal Commands.

The background to the RAF's airfield construction programme is described, followed by comprehensive tabular listings of nearly 400 RAF frontline airfields and bases, including full details of their locations, user squadrons/units, buildings, and present-day usage. First-hand accounts by veterans of the four wartime Commands add a layer of compelling personal testimony. Full orders of battle for each Command at notable points of the war are included as appendices.

RAF Airfields of World War 2 is illustrated with more than 260 photographs and maps, making it a unique single-volume illustrated work of reference.

Jonathan Falconer is the author of
RAF Bomber Airfields of World War 2 (Ian Allan, 1992) and RAF Fighter airfields of World War 2 (Ian Allan, 1993), both now out of print. These two books form the basis for this new and greatly expanded single volume, which contains significant new text and illustrations as well as including RAF Coastal Command bases and squadrons for the first time.

I was slightly disappointed slightly in this book.

The book is true to its title in that it mainly is a chronological list of airfields used in the UK during the Second War War. Some of the photographs (which are excellent and very sharp), if studied in detail, provide a glimpse into airfield life and throughout the book there are interesting facts and figures about various airfields.

The introduction to the development of airfields is interesting and well written, however, the final chapter that deals with the human perspective is, in my opinion, lacking. Many of the stories are quite dull and uncolourful. The remainder of the book is a highly detailed chronological list which outlines the airfield name, location, squadrons that operated from the field, dates, service life, use, etc, etc.

I was expecting far more photographs of the disused airfields with images of then and now.

If you are very keen on airfields in the UK, and wish to visit these fields, then this book is a must have (if only to obtain directions). But, if like me you are mildly interested, then I would not recommend spending than $20.00 on this book. Cheers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten Fields!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 27, 2014
For anyone who finds the history of the RAF interesting this book by Jonathan Faconer tells the stories of the fields-cum-airfields the Squadrons used to launch their attacks on nazi dominated Europe in the years that followed the defence of the land by Fighter Command, and the airfields from which they flew. A great book for those both interested in finding out, and also for those who wish to visit and celebrate the sites as a journey to see where the heroes of the whole of the RAF's personnel prepared the path to victory.
