The Power of Diasporas

Some of the most change-making citizens of a region are those that form a part of its diaspora. Building a new life in a completely different world triggers powerful entrepreneurial energies and, at the same time, changes one’s world-view.

Diaspora leaders and organizations thrive on a common purpose. They have unique perspectives and experiences, as well as key changemaking skills, such as cognitive empathy and the ability to organize and collaborate across sectors and regions.

We are operating on 3 levels - Mapping, Knowledge, Infrastructure - to advance changemaking within diaspora communities and to position diaspora leaders as catalyzers of positive change:

Mapping and Connection

We identify and connect social entrepreneurs, institutions, and leaders from all around the world. Ashoka is proud to have networks of social change leaders distributed in multiple industries, and we are in constant search of new partners and new members of our change-making community.

Knowledge

Ashoka is a creative environment to learn about systemic change and the role of diaspora communities in creating lasting impact, in the countries of origin and in their new destinations.

We aim to leverage the role, experience, and knowledge that different diasporas and diaspora leaders play in their professional and personal surroundings, and use the Ashoka channels to disseminate such knowledge and give it the needed visibility

Infrastructure & Opportunities of Investment

We are opening opportunities and developing channels to help diaspora communities invest in social entrepreneurs and young changemakers in their countries of origins. Through our programs, we also identify opportunities for diaspora organization and individuals to unlock funds and resources.

Why Diasporas?

There is a lot of diversity amongst networks of Diasporas and Ashoka believes in the power of those living and building communities outside of their countries (or continents) of origin, but who are willing to still contribute to the development of their old and their new homes.

The European Union Global Diaspora Facility is supporting a partnership between Africa 2.0 Spain and Ashoka: the creation of the first network of African diaspora leaders in Spain and match them with social entrepreneurs in Africa, in order to drive growth and impact on the continent and in Spain.
