Illustration and infographic for the weekend magazine of the local newspaper. This is about the Cicada, zammara smaragdula species, One of the most common cicada here in the center of the country, Costa Rica, Central America.
The first step, was the drawing after specimens of the Insect Museum of the Universidad de Costa Rica. There are several species this is one of the most commons.
Second step was the volume and shadows, I decide to use a warm hue for the underpainting.
Next was to lay down the base color. just flats colors...
Now I put the color pattern and a few color details like the eyes and the first draw of the wings (not show here)
I take a photo with my phone for the branch...

This is the image used just for the detailed work of the tymbal, the male cicadas have a noisemaker called a tymbal below each side of the anterior abdominal region, a central muscle moves super fast producing vibration on each tymbal.
