One Piece Film: Red Explained: Who Is Uta and What Are Her Powers?

One Piece Film: Red has plenty for fans to get excited about, but the new character Uta is at the center of all of it. Unlike the main characters of previous One Piece films, Uta isn’t a legendary old man or maniacal pirate — she’s a famous idol who is connected to Shanks. Let’s learn all there is to know about Uta.

ComingSoon spoiler alert

Who is Uta?

Uta is a young woman who is known around the world of One Piece as a beloved pop idol. She was friends with Luffy as a child, as the two of them were both in Foosha Village when they were young, though Luffy hasn’t seen her since she was dropped off at Elegia. Uta is revealed to be the daughter of the legendary Emperor Red-Haired Shanks, though she was partially raised by Gordon once she started staying on Elegia.

What Powers Does Uta Have?

At some point, Uta ate the Uta Uta no Mi, or the Sing-Sing Fruit. It’s a Paramecia-type fruit that lets Uta transport other peoples’ consciousnesses into a different world through the use of song, though it makes it so that Uta can no longer swim, as Devil Fruits grant powers in exchange for making you unable to swim. This power suits her, as she’s already an incredible singer that has aspirations for creating a better world.

Is Uta Shanks’ Daughter?

Technically, Uta is not blood-related to Shanks, as the end of the film shows that Shanks and his crew found an infant Uta inside a treasure chest that they stole from another pirate crew. Seeing as this echoes how Gol D. Roger found Shanks in a chest as a child, Shanks saw this as a sign and chose to raise Uta as his own daughter. Even towards the end of Film: Red, Shanks makes it very clear that Uta is his daughter, regardless of blood, and that the Navy will have to go through him and his crew to get her.
