Bertina Patricia Case OBITUARY

Bertina Patricia (Doherty) Case of Madison CT, widow of, Charles Ralph “Casey” Case passed away with family by her side on March 5, 2024.

Born, November 7, 1924, Bertina was the daughter of Agnes (O’Neill) Doherty and Thomas Francis Doherty of Boston, MA. She had one ‘little’ brother and best bud, Thomas Francis Doherty Junior (predeceased).

Bertina excelled in school, was class president, and sang in many ‘Gilbert and Sullivan’ High School musicals. She and Charlie, her handsome grammar school beau, had known each other since the third grade, and attended the same high school in East Rockaway, Long Island.

Bertina, called ‘Bertie’ by friends, attended business school after high school. Her first job was with the FBI in downtown New York City. She took a train, two subways, and crossed Foley Square to arrive at her job every day. Bertie was given a War Service Certificate signed by J Edgar Hoover for her service during WWII. After working for the FBI, Bertie became a legal secretary at LeBoeuf and Lamb in NYC. She later took a position as Assistant to the Dean of Admissions at Hofstra College on Long Island which Charlie attended on the GI Bill. Later in life, when her children were older, Bertie headed the business office for Anesthesia Associates at St. Raphael’s hospital in New Haven, where she made many lifelong friends.

Bertina leaves two children, Christine (Case) Comiskey (Peter), and Stephen Charles Case (Laurie), both currently living in Clinton CT.

Bertie was the ‘Flawless and Fabulous’ Nana of six loving grandchildren who adored her. Bertie’s grandkids could always come and talk to their Nana about anything at any time. She was ‘with it’ and always stayed contemporary and relevant. Bertie leaves eight great grandchildren with whom she happily celebrated many holidays and birthdays.

Bertie had a ‘great life’ as she always reminded her family. She had many true friends from various parts of her long life: she maintained friendships from her time spent in Long Island, then in Orange CT, and in Madison CT. Bertie spent many happy days with Charlie in Clearwater Florida (Cove Cay) and boating in Essex CT. She loved playing bridge with her friends in Madison, and has stayed in touch with several of her Bridge buddies. Her friends and helpers Lizzy H and Johanna B were her ‘angels’.

Always stylish and beautiful, Bertie had a knack for fashion and for decorating, but most of all, Bertie loved her family and always put family first. She would do anything she could to make her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren happy!

A celebration of life will be held at The Church of the Holy Advent, 81 East Main Street, Clinton on March 23 at 11 o’clock. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.
