Pomona voters are backing a measure which would allow the city to tax future legal cannabis businesses, according to early returns from the Los Angeles County registrar’s office.

Measure PC would establish a tax rate of up to 6 percent of gross receipts for all commercial cannabis/marijuana activities and $10 per square foot for cultivation. It proposes to generate between $400,000 to $500,000 annually for the city.

As of midnight, with 29 of the 60 precincts reporting, 71 percent of voters favored the measure.

The city banned commercial marijuana operations in late 2017. The City Council has spent the last several months crafting an ordinance to regulate cannabis operations to generate much-needed revenues for the city’s coffers and create resources to crack down on illegal shops.
