Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has landed her next lead role in a drama about legendary filmmaker Billy Wilder.

Wilder & Me, Deadline reports, follows Hawke's Calista, a musician at the outset of her career who learns about love, life, and cinema while working on the set of Wilder’s penultimate film, 1978's Fedora.

The film, an adaptation of Jonathan Coe's novel Mr Wilder & Me, is the third collaboration between screenwriter Christopher Hampton and director Stephen Frears, who previously teamed up to make Dangerous Liaisons and Cheri.

The star-studded cast also includes Christoph Waltz (No Time to Die) as Wilder, plus John Turturro (Severance), and Jon Hamm (Fargo), who will play Hollywood golden boy William Holden. Filming is set to begin in Greece in early 2025.

Gabrielle Stewart, the CEO of HanWay Films, which holds the movie's international distribution rights, said of Wilder & Me: "It is always exciting to announce such a big package with award-winning talent both in front and behind the camera such as Waltz, Turturro, Frears and Hampton.

"And at its heart, Maya Hawke is the perfect actress to take us on a magical journey of self-discovery and first love on the set of a legendary film director."

Hawke – who had a busy 2023, appearing in Oscars Best Picture nominee Maestro, Asteroid City, and the Ethan Hawke-directed Wildcat – is also set to appear in one of 2024's most-anticipated movies: this summer's long-awaited sequel to Inside Out, where she'll star as new emotion Anxiety.

Recently, the Do Revenge actor returned to Hawkins, Indiana to reprise her role as Robin Buckley in the Netflix hit Stranger Things, which began filming its fifth and final season in January.

Fans, however, likely won't return to Hawkins or the Upside Down until 2025, as Netflix didn't include Stranger Things in its 2024 release slate video.

Still, Hawke's co-star David Harbour previously told The Hollywood Reporter: "We have a while to shoot and to edit but we're going to work as hard and as fast as we possibly can to get it to people because I know they love the show as much as we do and I can't wait for them to see what's up next."
