What is Green Cat Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The green cat snake (Boiga cyanea) is a non-venomous snake that belongs to the largest snake family called Colubridae. The snake ranges in size from nearly 4 feet to almost 6.5 feet in length. It is a fully arboreal snake meaning that it is a tree-dwelling reptile. The snake mostly hunts at night (nocturnal) and preys mainly on lizards, birds (and their eggs), small mammals, and other snakes
  • The snake is mainly found in southeast Asia including parts of the Indian subcontinent, spanning the countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. This snake is found in a wide range of habitats but mostly in moist-wet forests at altitudes up to 6,500 feet (2,100 m), and along coastal forests
  • It has a medium-sized body with a moderately long tail. Its head is distinct from the narrow neck with large eyes; the snake has a rounded snout. The snake’s body is uniformly green; it may also be present in gray or blue shades. Its belly is greenish or yellow-white. The head of the snake may show vivid colors with golden brown eyes. Newly-hatched snakes are typically red-brown with a green head
  • Human contact with the green cat snake is uncommon, and bites have been rarely reported. The snake has a languid and mild disposition and usually does not bite, even with provocation or on being picked up. Green Cat Snake Bites are very rare and since the snake is non-venomous for humans, the snake bite does not cause any envenomation in humans; most bites are reportedly dry bites
  • There may be some mild to moderate effects at the bite site, including pain, swelling, and local numbness. But, by and large, no significant systemic symptoms are observed from Green Cat Snake Bites. A treatment of the condition may involve wound cleaning, steps to prevent secondary infections, and tetanus shots, as needed. Individuals with Green Cat Snake Bites have excellent prognoses; lethal bites are not reported
