Before departing the Chiefs, the backup quarterback left an indelible mark. In a preseason game, Shane Buechele pulled off a move that reminded everyone of Patrick Mahomes – he dodged defenders and threw a smart pass to Kekoa Crawford, and Mahomes’ reaction was captured and spread widely online.
Even though Buechele scored two touchdowns against the Saints and seemed to follow Mahomes’ path, the Chiefs had to let him go as they cut down their roster to 53 players. This move was tough, but the Chiefs’ general manager, Brett Veach, had good things to say about Buechele when talking to the media.

The Chiefs made a bold move by keeping just two quarterbacks on their active roster, leaving room for more depth in other areas. Buechele found a new home with the Buffalo Bills practice squad, where he might have a chance to spy on the Chiefs’ rival. Despite the speculation about who would be Mahomes’ backup, the Chiefs showed their confidence in Blaine Gabbert as their second option.

Veach explained, “It was a tough one. We’ve gone in different directions in different years. Sometimes, we just try to keep young guys, too.” He also added, “Sometimes, you have to make hard decisions. We certainly are going to miss him.”

The Bills have access to the Chiefs’ playbook now
Once the Chiefs’ chapter was closed for Buechele, a reporter named Matt Parrino from the Bills shared a video of him practicing in Buffalo, wearing the new number 6 jersey. Promptly, a Chiefs insider, Matt Derrick, reacted to the video, saying, it’s not too surprising that Shane Buechele ended up with an AFC rival. Buffalo is a good place for him, with a chance to win and compete. Plus, “the Bills get his institutional knowledge of the Chiefs offense.”
