Even though Buechele scored two touchdowns against the Saints and seemed to follow Mahomes’ path, the Chiefs had to let him go as they cut down their roster to 53 players. Buechele found a new home with the Buffalo Bills practice squad, where he might have a chance to spy on the Chiefs’ rival. Despite the speculation about who would be Mahomes’ backup, the Chiefs showed their confidence in Blaine Gabbert as their second option.

Veach explained, “It was a tough one. We’ve gone in different directions in different years. Sometimes, we just try to keep young guys, too.” He also added, “Sometimes, you have to make hard decisions. We certainly are going to miss him.”

During the second week of the preseason, Buechele put on a great show. He completed all ten of his passes, threw for over 100 yards, and even ran in for a score. Although Buechele spent his initial two seasons on the Chiefs’ practice squad after not being picked in the draft of 2021, he never got to play in an actual game for the Chiefs.
