Tour the attractions that make Greece an acclaimed vacation destination when visiting Attica. Attica is a mainland peninsula that reaches out into the glistening turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea. Discover sights shrouded in the myths and legends of ancient Greece. Enjoy the charm of picturesque islands and relax on beautiful beaches.

Athens is where the ruins of centuries-old landmarks bring fascinating aspects of Athenian history to life. Rising above the city streets is the hilltop Acropolis, which was the crux of ancient Greek civilization. Move between iconic ruins such as the Propylaea, Parthenon and Old Temple of Athena. Spot Hadrian’s Arch, the Panathenaic Stadium and Temple of Olympian Zeus while surveying the panoramic city views.

Dedicate time to exploring Athens’s varied neighborhoods. Monastiraki blends old ruins with the labyrinthine Monastiraki Flea Market while Psirri is packed with coffeeshops, kebab joints and taverns. Wander zigzagging cobblestone lanes lined with ceramics shops and jewelry boutiques in Plaka and shop at upscale boutiques in Kolonaki. Exarcheia is a hub for counterculture with many bookshops, record stores and live music venues.

Travel east to Marathon, where the Athenians defeated the Persians in 490 B.C. Nearby Schinias Beach is a lovely sweep of golden sands and crystalline waters. Visit the old mining town of Lavrio and gaze in awe at the Temple of Poseidon, at Cape Sounion. Spot exotic animals at Attica Zoological Park and follow scenic trails through Tatoi Forest.

Boats depart from Pireas for the picture-book Saronic Islands. Chic ports, secluded beaches and café-lined esplanades await in Aegina and Poros. Bike between the bays and villages of verdant Agistri and visit romantic Hydra, where singer Leonard Cohen once lived.

Athens International Airport is the main transportation hub for Attica. The region is busy year round so consider timing your arrival to coincide with exciting annual events. Among these are July’s Poros Arts Festival, September’s Aegina Pistachio Festival and November’s Athens Authentic Marathon.
