Dr. Harry C. Otwell, optometrist of Fayetteville, died January 17 in a Fayetteville hospital. Born in Lynn (sp), Kansas, the son of William E. and Martha Hopfer Otwell, he was a graduate of Pennsylvania Optical State College and had taken post-graduate work at Pennsylvania State College of Optometry, Northern Illinois College of Optometry and Southern College of Optometry in Tennessee. He practiced optometry in Fayetteville for 39 years, retiring in 1974. He was a life honorary member of the American Optometric Association and the Arkansas Optometric Association and also held membership in the American Optometric Foundation, the American Academy of Optometry, Beta Sigma Kappa, and a number of professional associations. An honorary degree of Doctor of Ocular Science was conferred on him by Southern College of Optometry in 1971 in recognition of the research and development of a program of therapeutic orthopetics. He developed the program and techniques after 25 years of practical research. He lectured on the program throughout the United States. Dr. Otwell received his 50-year memberships in the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion and Modern Woodmen of the World Lodge. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Lions Club, United Commercial Travelers, and other local organizations. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lela Montgomery Otwell of the the home; a brother Rufus Otwell of Palmer, Kansas, and several nieces and nephews. Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, January 19, at the First United Presbyterian Church with burial under the direction of Moore's Chapel in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Masonic rites were held. Optometrists served as honorary pallbearers.
